Senator Assails Court’s Decision on Montana Campaign Contributions

Source: NY Times

Jon Tester, Montana’s buzz-cut farmer-senator, reacted angrily on Monday to the Supreme Court’s summary dismissal of his state’s 100-year-old ban on corporate campaign contributions, calling it another blow to democracy.“The court’s supposed to be full of smart, well-thought-out people, but they rolled back Montana 100 years, back to the time literally when millionaires and billionaires bought elections, and they did it under the guise of free speech, which is crazy,” he said in an interview. “This is really a sad day in American democracy.”

In a brief unsigned opinion, the court ruled that a law passed when copper barons ruled the state violated the tenets set out by the Citizens United decision, which allowed corporations and unions to contribute to campaign-oriented organizations. Even before the court’s ruling, Mr. Tester had found himself strafed by Republican groups like Crossroads GPS financed by donors who have largely gone unreported.

“If they are able to paint me as something I am not, they have a chance to win this election,” he said. “And they’re doing a lot to paint me as someone I am not.”

need to take their rights back by not voting for any candidate that accepts money from out of state or corporate sources.
We the people still have the choice to make the expenditures of the wealthy, as they attempt to buy our Democracy, a waste of their financial efforts.
Candidates who accept such funds need to be screened and disallowed to ever hold office.
We need to put the Koch stink on them!

Tenth Amendment?

This Supreme Court is a joke. It is nine black-robed Lords, with five of them politicized to the hilt.

All five of them ought to be impeached.

Tester is currently running about 2 points behind Republican rival, who mouths the specious Republican/Citizens United argument about "freedom of speech". If Tester loses to this ****, it would be a travesty (and would also put the fragile Dem control of the Senate in danger).
Tester needs our support, including, yeah, our money.

I'll be supporting Jon Tester's reelection bid, and doing all I can to prevent Denny Rehberg from taking his seat!

I feel very sad that this is happening to our country, also. It seems the more we try to strike down "Citizens United" the more powerful it gets. The rich will buy elections. Even if we get Obama re-elected we have to worry about what he is going to be stuck working with in the next four years. I honestly think the American people will not tolerate another four years of a do nothing Congress and God help us if some of the legislation the Republicans have recommended passes. What really concerns me about buying elections is the other things it will buy. It is like a Mafia in Politics. They can buy opinions, court decisions, votes. It is almost like the Supreme Court made it legal to be a criminal. I'm from WV and I have seen this for years. Coal Companies come in and provide jobs etc. When they get finished they lay off workers. They pay very little taxes. Every bit of the land is undermined. Now, the gas line layers are coming in. For years the state has been owned by everyone else. The Massey catastrophe was waiting to happen. Here is the coal operator who wants to come in and be non-union. He buys off judges, etc. when he does something illegal. These men knew they had to go into a mine that was unsafe but, they had no union to look out for their rights. Money spoke in this situation. Is this what is going to happen to all of America? Are these politicians going to do crooked things for money? I hope the judges can open their eyes and see what they have allowed to happen. Is this the way politics works? Help me to understand. I guess I've never been political but, I always felt politics was dishonest. Now, it is even more dishonest!
