Memo: LePage wants to cut number of state workers to fund tax cut

Source: Bangor Daily News

Gov. Paul LePage has told his commissioners he wants to cut the number of state workers and reduce overall state spending below current levels to fund a significant income tax cut in next year’s budget package.

A memo that was sent to commissioners earlier this month and obtained by Maine Public Radio reveals that the governor has set three goals for the budget-writing process that is already underway.

First, he wants to cut the number of state employees to 9,500 from the current level of over 11,000. Not all of those jobs are filled, so it’s unclear how many state workers could be directly affected by the proposal.

Second, he wants overall state spending to be less than the current $6.7 billion two-year state budget. But, again, the memo gives no direction as to what spending areas should be scrutinized.

Reason I asked about your voyon reference is that I am now up in the Fort Kent region, and all the French Acadians use "wayon" regularly. It's such an obscure reference, I thought maybe I was a neighbor to your MIL.

If you like the "voyon" phrase, a local company created a few t-shirts that promote the Acadians up here.

along with his daughter's position. The man is a scum, he gave his buddies $120 million tax cut, then complained that the state budget is short $120 million!

psst LePage - rich people use govt services, too.

This needs to be framed as cutting services - and listing examples - such as in Kansas - to break the mental gridlock of the long spoken GOP speak 'cut spending' as to what that leads to in daily life for citizens.

We've seen it in our schools - employees are fired because their jobs are being contracted then those same people are hired back by the contracting company but with less pay and zero benefits. The net result is a transfer of income from those hard working employees to the owner of the contracting company (who naturally has ties to someone in state government).

They already tried to impeach him. Didn't go any where. Disappointing. Just got to wait it out and hope the Maine House and Senate keep this guy in check (they have so far).

Republicans love government when they are the ones getting paid.

They hate when others are getting paid.
