Good Girls Have Abortions, Too, NARAL Chief Tells DNC
Source: Huffington Post
PHILADELPHIA ― NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue confronted head-on the stereotype that women who have abortions should be ashamed during remarks Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention.
About 1 in 3 American women have abortions by the age of 45, and the majority are mothers just trying to take care of the families they already have, Hogue said. You see, its not as simple as Bad girls get abortions and good girls have families. We are the same women at different times in our lives, each making decisions that are the best for us.
We need a president who has the experience, the wisdom and the grit to stand up against the bullies. We need a president who knows that womens rights are human rights, Hogue said.
Hogue shared her own experience of terminating a pregnancy earlier in life before starting a family. To succeed in life, all we need are the tools, the trust and the chance to chart our own path. I was fortunate enough to have these things when I found out I was pregnant years ago. I wanted a family, but it was the wrong time, Hogue said.

Many women have abortions because they cannot AFFORD to carry a fetus to term or raise a child after it is born.
Oh yes, those "pro-life" people will say "But, why not put it up for adoption?"
Yeah, ok. So, the now pregnant lady is supposed to spend 7 to 9 months of her life carrying a child around. Most women would have to take several weeks off work towards the end of the pregnancy and then after delivery.
That is up to two months of no salary in most cases.
"Pro-Life" Repuglicans, you want to really reduce abortions?
How about:
1.) Advocating for birth control, so that a woman doesn't get pregnant in the first case if she doesn't desire.
Not just birth control for women, but for men too. Two is better than one! Make the birth control both easy to access, and extremely low-cost, or even FREE. You know who is really good at this? Planned Parenthood.
2.) Advocating for paid family leave so that a woman doesn't lose her income in those final weeks before or after the child is born.
Some women are actually already mothers, married or not. They are usually working because they need that income! Taking time off before and after birth is a huge impact to family income.
3.) Advocating that insurance companies cannot charge a higher premium to a woman that is pregnant, is planning on getting pregnant, or may be pregnant.
Again, less financial burden. Why would a woman feel like keeping a fetus to term if she knows that her health insurance premium will increase significantly as long as she is pregnant?
4.) Advocate for FREE pre-natal care.
If a "pro-lifer" is truly interested in the "life of the unborn child", why not make sure that the expectant mother gets all the care and medical attention she needs, FOR FREE, to help guarantee the best outcome for the unborn? Oh, and those multiple pre-natal appointments during the pregnancy, how about she or her boss get reimbursed salary-wise for the entire DAY. That way, she won't have to high-tail it from work to the doctor's appointment, and then rush back afterwards? Such a thing can't be good for a developing fetus!
5.) Advocating that a pregnant woman, if she does elect to keep the child and raise it, gets federal assistance if she desires it.
This means day care, and extra money to help pay for care of the child for say, the first 3 or 4 years. You want a woman to experience the joys of motherhood? Help her financially and socially! I am all too willing to have "my tax money" go to that, instead of making more bullets or bombs. Or are the "pro-lifers" only caring about a child while it is still in the womb? Do they run away and hide after it is born?
6.) Advocating that a woman that gets pregnant by rape shouldn't be made to feel she has no options.
A stance of "Oh, wow, you got raped and are pregnant. Well, too bad that you gotta keep it now!" isn't really an incentive to a traumatized woman to consider carrying to term and possibly giving the baby up for adoption. Maybe we give her all the support she needs for her traumatic experience, and allow her full freedom and acceptance to make whatever decision she feels is best for her?

(27,630 posts)Allowing women to forego the consequences of having sex is cheating God's laws.
Are you of the impression that anti-choicers care about people? Disabuse youself of that notion and see it from anti-choicers' perspective: sex has consequences and nobody gets to escape.

(6,858 posts)How interesting though, that these "pro-life" anti-choice people somehow always seem to become pro-choice when they are directly affected. Well, temporarily at least. Then they go right back to being anti-choice.

(6,496 posts)you should "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" so they are not willing to offer any meaningful help to these women. They seem to take issue with anyone receiving any more help then they did. In order to keep things "fair" for them, we must all suffer equally. This is also why they are against progress in so many other areas such as education. Seems strange to me that these same people often consider themselves Christians. We have a very selfish variety of Christians in this country.

(34,136 posts)So young people know how babies are made and how unwanted pregnancies can be prevented.
I've met too many young people who have no idea about those two subjects. And I do not spend much time with young people so there must be many many more.

(110 posts)They care about abortion as a vote getter and nothing else.
Abortion enables them to persuade people to vote against their economic interest by appealing to "family values".
If they had the chance to ban abortion in the morning, they'd run a mile from the prospect.
