Iran, Saudi Arabia not invited to UN summit of world powers on Syria

Source: RT News

Iran and Saudi Arabia have not been invited to UN summit of world powers on Syria as peace negotiator Kofi Annan convenes the meeting in Geneva the coming weekend.

“I have sent invitations to the Foreign Ministers of the five permanent members of the Security Council – China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom and the United States of America – and Turkey,” Kofi Annan has said in his statement.

The list of those invited to Geneva also includes the Secretary Generals of the United Nations and the League of Arab States, the EU Foreign Affairs chief, the Foreign Minister of Iraq, the Chair of the Summit of the League of Arab States, Kuwait, the Chair of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the League of Arab States and Qatar, and the Chair of the Follow-up Committee on Syria of the League of Arab States.

Kofi Annan defined the aim of the meeting as “to identify steps and measures to secure full implementation of the six-point plan and Security Council resolutions 2042 and 2043, including an immediate cessation of violence in all its forms.”

the invitees were the permanent members of the security council and the arab league. That said, that would only be to develop a strategy to progress diplomatic initiatives.

But to include Turkey, Iraq, Kuwait and Qatar but not Iran and Saudi Arabia? We know they are arch enemies so may be the calculus is they would just get in the way of progress but Iran must be part of any solution in Syria because Syria is an Iranian puppet state.

why bring two more known agitators for terror to the table for PEACE? Particularly, these two.

Makes no sense right now. This is obviously a part of someone's calculus. AND I agree with it.

Neither of these countries, right NOW, are relevant to the SPRING, in my opinion. SOMEONE else thinks this as well. Good.

All three of these nations border Syria, and even if they aren't given any type of direct influence, they should be able to have some say in the matter, IMO. Defectors have gone to Jordan and Lebanon. Killing and violence has spilled over into Lebanon twice, as I recall. An all out civil war in Syria will affect those countries more directly, in some cases, than Qatar and Kuwait.

They will come for peace when it is their turn to do so... I still ponder over your question though.....The remaining makeup reflects who is relevant, that is all that I can guess or say at this point.

In my own heart, I say the parties you mention, SHOULD be there. That will come...

My view is that this is the 21st Century now, it is time for ALL of this to STOP. NO MORE TERROR, NO TYRANNY.

EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE HONEST, AND MAYBE WE CAN DO THIS. WE ALL NEED TO LIVE TOGETHER. PERIOD.

WE ARE ALL SMARTER AND BETTER THAN THIS SHIT.

WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE THE ELITES OF THE WORLD, BUT WE DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE TO DO WHAT THEY WANT US TO DO. PEOPLE SHOULD UNDERSTAND THAT. PEOPLE ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE, WHEN THEY KNOW THE CHOICE IS THEIRS TO MAKE. AND IT IS.
DO NOT LET THEM MAKE YOUR DECISION FOR YOU. MAKE THEM YOURSELVES. SIMPLE.

SOMEONE IS ALWAYS GOING TO DECIDE, EITHER YOU OR THEM.

And none of the neighbors?

Yeah, good luck with devising a resolution that will be acceptable.

Someone isn't understanding "the calculus" however you perceive it to be... and it ain't me.

This is NOT an Arab Spring revolution no matter how much propaganda you want to regurgitate.

10. United Nations to hold emergency session on Syria
Wed Jun 27, 2012, 08:10 PM
Jun 2012

BEIRUT — With a new warning that strife-torn Syria confronts a "catastrophic" fate, the United Nations said Wednesday that it would convene an emergency session this weekend in a bid to salvage a U.N.-brokered peace plan that has failed to halt the nation's slide toward civil war.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton agreed to participate in the "Action Group for Syria" meeting Saturday in Geneva after U.N. special envoy Kofi Annan excluded Iran, Washington's foe and a stalwart ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad. British officials also welcomed a new plan by Annan and Foreign Secretary William Hague said he would attend the session, as will diplomats from the three other U.N. Security Council permanent member nations: France, Russia and China.

The top U.S. diplomat said Annan had devised a "political transition road map" that provides some hope for resolving a conflict that is escalating into an unchecked cycle of sectarian killings, kidnappings and atrocities by both sides, according to a new U.N. report.

"The situation on the ground is dangerously and quickly deteriorating," the U.N. Human Rights Council wrote. "Further militarization of the crisis will be catastrophic."
