Debate commission to Trump: The dates are set
Source: Politico
The Commission on Presidential Debates responded to Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee's complaints about the debate schedule with a message on Sunday: The schedule is set.
"The Commission on Presidential Debates (CPD) started working more than 18 months ago to identify religious and federal holidays, baseball league playoff games, NFL games, and other events in order to select the best nights for the 2016 debates," the commission said in a statement. "It is impossible to avoid all sporting events, and there have been nights on which debates and games occurred in most election cycles. A debate has never been rescheduled as a result."

(32,077 posts)It is not about who will win the ratings. Its that people will have to choose the debate over the nfl or visa versa. That will cause the debate audience to be smaller than it would have been.

The only ones who watch debates are political junkies and those interested in the race. And those people don't care what else is on at the time.

Good thing NBC's Thursday night lineup isn't what it used to be.
Really? Could care less. No sports on tv allowed in the main rooms UNLESS it's the playoffs for Tigers, Pistons or Red Wings. Even then we really just watch the very, very end. We all played sports as kids/young adults but no sports on tv was the rule of the family. Even on Thanksgiving a couple of the in-laws will go downstairs to watch but everyone else is upstairs.
My dad played football in high school and never, ever wanted to watch a game - too boring he would say.
Can't you just record, or dvr the debates then? I probably might check in now and then but I already know who I am voting for.

(5,106 posts)Taping the game, of course, would spoil things. Taping the debates, however, would make sense.

(356 posts)Would watch the debates if a game was not on at the same time. I do not think that logic holds. There are popular programs on virtually every night of the week. The schedule was made months before the nfl schedule came out. This is just trump trying to be the candy ass whiny victim that for some reason his followers adore.
Ruby the Liberal
(26,219 posts)I had the same reaction when I saw the first debate was scheduled for Sept 26th - "During Monday Night Football?" And I'm not even a football fan, but its fall.

(356 posts)Football does not matter. It is a nothing burger. Just don trying to cook up a controversy if he decides to wuss out. Remember , both parties agreed to the dates long ago. I assume millions of dems watch football too, in spite of the reps attempts to presume ownership of it the way they do freedom and patriotism. In fact, if it were not for a lot of big blue cities the nfl wouldn't exist. So yeah. Dems love America football and apple pie. You just gotta choose what you want to watch and dvr the other.

(356 posts)But given the homogenous love of football that transcends parties, debates during games give no one the advantage. If you would rather watch a football game rather than a debate chances are you would not be watching the debate anyway.
LuvLoogie
(7,028 posts)Besides, the campaigns don't set the presidential debate schedule. There is no unfairness or seeking to minimize the audience. Donald is looking for an excuse for why he's gonna suck. That's all./

(90,793 posts)This really concerns you. The nonpartisan Commission looked at every religious and nonreligious hoilday and sports event to work out the best dates. Using their same criteria, please tell us what dates you think would be better? Or using other criteria -- which please share with us -- what dates would be better?
As far as I can tell, the only people in real life who are complaining about the dates are Benedict Donald and his team.
And frankly, they don't concern me at all. With them, it's just The Art of the Stall.

Five percent of respondents said they would cast a ballot for President Harambe. Though not a major margin, 5% is greater than the support shown for Green Party candidate Jill Stein who earned only 2% support in the poll. It nearly matches support for Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, who has 6% support.

(111,339 posts)I think he just doesn't want to learn the canned speeches the party wants him to learn and recite if he hears one of the keywords in a question. Republicans haven't answered any questions for years and have gotten away with it every time. These aren't really debates, they're tests of how well some dummy the Republicans are running can learn and recite.
What he wants is to go in there as unprepared as he always is, to play to the bully boys in the audience and make Clinton cry. Now we all know the latter is not going to happen but he doesn't. He's an ignorant blowhard who thinks he knows everything because he's managed to get rich by cheating people.
My best guess says that he will resist the programming and the Republicans will start to panic and argue over minutiae about formats, lighting, podiums, distance between candidates, audience makeup, and all the rest until everybody throws their hands up in defeat and they're canceled. I hope that's unlikely, also.
They know this is going to be a repeat of the Clinton-Lazio debate when she first ran for the Senate. Lazio lost when he shoved a piece of paper in her face and reminded every single woman in the audience of a nit picking, overbearing and angry husband with a credit card statement he didn't like. The Orange Fart will remind them of far worse.
He, of course, will be supremely confident that a woman with too many birthdays and no current sex appeal (to him) is going to be some kind of a pushover. Scared of her? Hell no.

(2,900 posts)So with MNF, and now the Thursday Night game, that leaves only Tuesday and Wednesday for debates, and The Donald has his hair done on Tuesday for date night on Wednesday with Melania. So it looks like he has it all booked up and can't debate. Even though he proved in the republican primary that he is a master debater that can knock cold a moderator with a remark about bleeding that in no way refers to menstruation.
