Utah could vote Democrat for president for first time in 5 decades
Source: KUTV
The Republican and Democrat national conventions are over and as the dust starts to settle, it looks like Hillary Clinton has a chance to carry Utah in the U.S. presidential election.
A new Hinckley Institute-Salt Lake Tribune poll shows the two are virtually tied with 35 percent for Donald Trump and 36 percent for Hillary Clinton. That is as close as a Democratic candidate has been to victory in more than half a century.
Clinton declined to campaign in the state during primary season and came in the spring only to raise money. Republican Mitt Romney, popular in Utah, spoke strongly against Trump. Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee fought against Trump at the Republican National Convention and said he doesn't know if he will vote for for his party's candidate, Trump.
Utah has been the most Republican state for 40 years but that could change with Trump's run toward the White House.

Gary Johnson is polling in the mid 20s. If he campaigns heavily in a few of these western states, he could take 1-2. If its a close race nationally, that would keep either Trump or Clinton from getting 270. Then guess what happens.
But being a close race is not what I expect to see happen

(16,226 posts)You can always tell when they call it the "Democrat" convention, instead of Democratic. If the Libertarians take a couple already red states, it wouldn't really hurt the Dems, would it?

(20,450 posts)Other than that, it's nice to hear that Dems have a chance to win Utah. A few years back, I tried to tell my father that Salt Lake City especially is becoming more progressive and liberal. He yelled at me, exclaiming that it's not true. But it is true. The younger generations of Mormons are not as religious or conservative. Things are changing.

(66,467 posts)Republicans deliberately getting it wrong in order to needle us (hey, fuck you, Republicans! You nominated fucking Donald Trump!)
But Democrats need to get it right...

(17,486 posts)There is no link in the story to the poll. I like to see details of the poll. The last poll the Salt Lake Tribune published was June 11. They mentioned this poll in an August 1 story.
What poll is KUTV talking about?
