Trump says U.S. might abandon allies attacked by Russia or North Korea

Source: LA Times

Donald Trump called Hillary Clinton “dumb” on Friday for saying the United States should defend allies under military attack by Russia or North Korea even if they have failed to pay in full for U.S. protection.

The Republican presidential nominee renewed his threat to abandon U.S. allies in Europe and Japan, saying, “You always have to be prepared to walk.”

<...>

Trump complained that Japan, Germany and other allies “don’t pay anywhere near what it costs” to defend them. So the U.S. should threaten to break its obligation to defend NATO members under attack by Russia, he said.

I think the republican party is working on an offer that he can't refuse.

And this particular instance highlights it beautifully. He's gone on record numerous times, and his Trumpanzees have echoed him, that during Obama's tenure the US has become less respected and trusted around the world, yadda yadda. Never mind, of course, indications to the contrary. They believe it, so it must be true!

Then they think, somehow, that the US flatly declining to honor a treaty obligation will restore America's image abroad. Or even worse, demanding some kind of payout to honor a treaty obligation. The end result of this course of action, naturally, would be that no one would trust the US or be willing to enter into treaties, or even trade deals, with us. And this coming from the party of "personal responsibility"!

But sure, let's just cut those freeloading foreigners off! When the aggressor nation's tanks roll into their capital, I'm sure they'll respect and admire the US then. That'll teach 'em.

This is even more irresponsible than last time

This type of thinking is what has the National Security state in a tizzy
over Trump

He really is giving Putin a green light to annex anything at all

I think he's done. And dumb. No way this is going to fly in Washington.

I saw a poll a while back that found that 50% of Canadians want Trump to win. Granted, this was before last week's series of trainwrecks. And it's also possible that the Canadians responding to this poll were being facetious, or just think it'd be hilarious to watch Trump stumble from one debacle to another for four years.

My colleagues, of course, know I'm from the States, and I constantly get asked how in the hell Trump managed to make it this far. I can only shrug my shoulders and say, "Stupid people vote for stupid candidates."
