Muslim couple removed from Delta flight: 'It was humiliating'

Source: USA Today

What happened next would overshadow the good times they'd enjoyed: A flight crew member had complained to the pilot that she was uncomfortable with the Muslim couple in the second row of economy class. The woman was wearing a head scarf and using a phone, and the man was sweating, she allegedly told the pilot.

that the rare times I fly is that I always get a first class ticket.

I learned some years back, before 9/11, that if you plan far enough ahead they may not be too expensive. And I'm willing to pay the premium. That said, a year or so back I needed to make a trip on short notice and did fly coach, because the first class ticket was going to be more than I was willing to fork over. On the way back home, the gate agent, shortly before boarding, announced that a first class seat was available for fifty dollars, so I went straight to the check-in desk and grabbed it They refunded the $25 fee for my checked baggage, so it felt like a bargain.

I'm a former airline employee, started the job several years before any sort of security, so I'm singularly unimpressed with the way it is these days.

Being packed into a metal tube like sardines in a can, with body heat from dozens to hundreds of people and limited airflow, makes me break out in a sweat too until I can turn the little air nozzle thingy on. Guess I'd better rethink flying if "sweating" is a sign that you're up to something.

Then again, I'm probably safe. I'm lily-white and my wife doesn't wear a headscarf. Shame on that flight attendant, shame on the captain for enabling her ignorance, and shame on the airline for allowing this to happen.

Security is theater. Next, the actual terrorists maybe white pilots recruited to the cause. Why do something they've already tried? Their tactics change, and we play catchup.

Meanwhile we're not free. We fear. Fear is not winning when you claim to fight a war on "terror." By that metric, we're losing badly, while we treat our citizens, of whatever faith, creed, race, or color like shit. Like criminals.

The "war on terror" has us peeing in our pants. Is that winning?

Now sweating is illegal.

But he answered all security questions correctly, had a ticket, so he gave Atta the boarding pass and sent him on his way. But things just didn't sit right with him. When the first tower was hit, he wondered about this guy. When the second tower was hit, he knew it was Atta.

99.999% of the time it means nothing. But that .001% is 9/11. There was something in Touhey's gut that said this Atta guy was bad news. And there was nothing he could articulate to delay Atta, so he waved him on. He still feels guilty that he allowed Atta to go, even though he had no reason to stop him, not in a pre-9/11 world.
The other agent who had contact with Atta that day committed suicide.

"Something is fishy here. I could speak up, risk my job. But if I stay silent, I and everyone aboard this plane could die."
The person you speak up about could be this couple, or they could be Richard Reid. You don't know until after the dust settles. Just hope the dust isn't a cloud of jet fuel and airplane parts.

40. Sweating is one of the

factors the TSA looks for at passenger screening. "Excessive perspiration, inconsistent with environment."
People sweat when they're nervous about something.
So the company apologizes to the couple, maybe gives them a free flight, then drops it. They tell the flight crew to be more careful about who they remove from the flight, but they'll be backed in whatever they feel they need to do in the future to ensure the safety of their flight. No one has to go through any sensitivity training. No one gets fired.
The couple may sue for something, but I honestly don't know what for. The flight crew made a call. It was the wrong one. But they shouldn't be afraid for their jobs when it comes time to make a call like that. Not when you have the lives of more than 200 people in your hands.

55. Sweating, nervousness, fidgeting.
Sat Aug 6, 2016, 03:48 PM
Aug 2016

It's enough to get you a second look, and additional questions.
From leaked documents from the TSA, how they decide who gets looked at for additional screening.
Assign 1 point per “stress” factor, 2 points per “fear” factor and 3 points per “deception factor”. If the passenger scores 0-3 points, let them pass. If they score 4 or 5, refer for “selective screening”. If they score 6 or more, refer and notify a Law Enforcement Officer (LEO)
Stress factors (17):
- Arrives late for flight, if known

- Avoids eye contact with security personnel or LEO

- Exaggerated yawning as the individual approaches the screening process

- Excessive fidgeting, clock watching, head-turning, shuffling feet, leg shaking

- Excessive perspiration inconsistent with the environment

- Face pale from recent shaving of beard

- Facial flushing while undergoing screening

- Faster eye blink rate when individual requested to submit to screening procedures

- Increased breathing rate, panting

- Obvious “Adam’s Apple” jump when requested to submit to screening procedures

- Protruding or beating neck arteries

- Repetitive touching of face

- Rubbing or wringing of hands

- Strong body odour

- Sweaty palms

- Trembling

- Whistling as the individual approaches the screening process

Fear factors (15):

- Bag appears to be heavier than expected or does not suit the individual’s appearance

- Bulges in clothing

- Cold penetrating stare

- Constantly looking at other travellers or associates

- Exaggerated emotions or inappropriate behaviours to the location such as crying, excessive laughter or chatter

- Exaggerated, repetitive grooming gestures

- Hesitation/indecision on entering checkpoint or submitting to screening process

- Individuals who are seemingly unrelated but display identical dress or luggage

- Powerful grip of a bag or hand inside the bag

- Rigid posture, minimal body movements with arms close to side

- Scans area, appearing to look for security personnel or LEO

- Shows unusual interest in security officers and their work routine

- Displays arrogance and verbally expresses contempt for the screening process

- Wearing improper attire for location

- Widely open staring eyes

Deception factors (6):

- Appears to be confused or disoriented

- Appears to be in disguise

- Asks the Behaviour Detection Officer security-related questions

- Does not respond to authoritative commands

- Maintains covert ties with others (maintaining consistent eye contact with others, exhibiting hand gestures to others or passing objects to others)

- Repeatedly pats upper body with hands (not associated with divesting objects at X-ray/Metal Detector).

A woman, in coach, complains to an attendant that she is uncomfortable having to sit next to a black man. The attendant says, "Let me see what I can do" and goes off. You see her talking to another crew member. Then she comes back and says, "I checked and we have an extra seat in First Class. No one should have to sit next to this person. If you will come with me we will get you reseated." The woman starts to move. The attendant says, "Not you madam. Sir, will you come with me. There is no reason for you to sit next to an ignorant bigot like this."

Obviously never happened, but it makes a point. Do that a couple of times, offering the offended Muslims the courtesy of not having to be the recipient of mindless bigotry instead of pandering to bigots instead and 'complaints' might drop off.

If I found myself on a flight with Trump, I might complain to a flight attendant that HE made me uncomfortable and nervous because he was orange and kept muttering about Muslims and nukes.
