California gun group sues to publish lawmakers' addresses
Updated 2:52 pm, Saturday, August 6, 2016
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) A California gun rights group is suing after a legislative lawyer blocked a blog post listing the addresses of lawmakers who had recently supported tough gun control legislation.
The Firearms Policy Coalition filed the federal lawsuit Friday on behalf of an unnamed member who had posted the home addresses of 40 legislators, pledging to keep the information up until they voted to repeal the laws or died, The Sacramento Bee (http://bit.ly/2apZNnQ ) reported Friday.
The Office of Legislative Counsel demanded that WordPress, which hosts the blog, remove the post. The office cited a state law that restricts the publication of home addresses of elected officials if made with intent or threat of causing bodily harm. WordPress complied.
"What the government is doing here is censoring speech it doesn't like, and we'll prove that out in the case," said coalition President Brandon Combs in a statement.

(26,297 posts)other than law enforcement know what firearms someone legally owns.
And before you start on it, no I do not own a gun nor do I plan on ever purchasing one I just dont think it makes sense to have such a database for the public as it would be a huge invasion of privacy.
As for law enforcement the site makes sense to have such a database for them especially if it automatically provides the data to officers responding to a call to an address.

(162 posts)who are being treated for any psychiatric disorder, including depression and anxiety. Include what, if any, medications they've been prescribed. I want to know who might go 'a little funny in the head' and present a threat to me. Maybe some of these people should be up there in the nervous hospital and not walking around waiting to blow.
While we're at it, I want to know the name of everyone who is taking opiates for pain management. Heck, my kid might be over their house some day and find some pills and overdose. Fuck it, let's publish all prescription drug usage.
I also want to force all ISPs to make public the browsing history of every single one of their customers. I want to make sure none of my neighbors are looking at kiddie porn.
Fuck privacy; if this saves even one life...

(11 posts)From all the guns laws that they just passed. So they should have no problem protecting themselves. I think it BS that law makers exempt themselves from laws they pass.

(7,901 posts)Then we'll see how long this lasts. I'd include any additional addresses they have in Bimini, Cancun, or Bahrain. The postal service will collapse delivering the mail from the parents of murdered children.

There are quite a few folks who agree with posts 1 and 6 that all gun owner's addresses should be published along with what they own. Is that a good idea? What is the difference?

(21,768 posts)This has got to be one of the stupidest strategies ever. Guaranteed to invoke sympathy for the lawmakers (who will be seen as courageous victims) and dissolve support for the gun lobby, who will rightfully be perceived as threatening officials.
What could be more likely to "backfire" than this idiocy?
