Trump Tells Christian Broadcasting Network: Christians Have Lost Their Free Speech

In an apparent effort to shore up support with evangelicals, Donald Trump gave an interview to Christian Broadcasting Networks Jenna Browder on Thursday in which he expressed his sympathy for the plight of American Christians who have lost their free speech, he said.
Specifically, Trump repeated his vow to repeal the Johnson Amendment, a 1954 addition to the federal tax code that prohibits religious organizations from endorsing or promoting candidates or else risk their tax-exempt status. The amendment limits the free speech of pastors in CBNs gloss. Free speech is being taken away from people that are good people, Trump told Browder.
Trump said that if he accomplished the death of the Johnson Amendment, it would be a great thing for religion as a whole. Trump consolidated support among evangelical leaders after he clinched the Republican nomination, and the GOP platform under Trump is the most anti-abortion, anti-LGBT it has been in its history.

(13,029 posts)What they're NOT entitled to is a tax exemption, either for themselves or their flock of sheep. They accept the latter only if they agree not to become a tax-free money conduit for political candidates.
And this applies to all tax-exempt organizations, not just the poor, persecuted Xstians.
Trump just keeps throwing shit at the wall, hoping something will stick and not stink.

(1,254 posts)The IRS, from DAY ONE, allows ANY and ALL organizations to "SELF-DECLARE" they are 401(c)4 organizations and begin operating as such. No group was prohibited from doing that. These organizations have TWO OPTIONS. Self declare or wait until their applications are approved by the IRS. The scandal broke out when some conservative groups claimed they were deliberately TARGETED by the IRS. These groups were ENTIRELY FREE to conduct their activities if they wanted too. They did not have to wait for PRIOR approval from the IRS. The ONE problem with "self-declaring" 401(c)4 status, not waiting for IRS approval is that IF BY THE TIME to organization has to file its first annual report and they haven't YET received IRS approval, the organization has to reveal/report its DONORS. The IRS has no authority to stop ANY group/organization FROM forming and operating. The only power the IRS has is to say YES or NO on TAX STATUS. Those conservative groups waiting for IRS approval, did so VOLUNTARILY. They wanted to avoid the risk of having to reveal their donors.

(3,660 posts)Arrested everyone who wears a cross and says "God bless you" after a sneeze. Who would want to go back to the days when people could put fish stickers on their cars, say grace in restaurants, quote scripture and end every political speech with God Bless America. Yep it's a lot better now we've taken free speech away from Christians.
