Trump proposes ideological test for Muslim immigrants and visitors to the U.S.
Source: Washington Post
Donald Trump called Monday for a Cold War-style mobilization against radical Islamic terror, repeating and repackaging calls for strict immigration controls including a new ideological litmus test for Muslim visitors and migrants and blaming the current level of worldwide terrorist attacks on President Obama and Hillary Clinton.
In a grab bag of promises to battle the Islamic State organization together with Russia and anyone else who wants to join the fight, the Republican nominee underlined the need to improve intelligence and shut down militant propaganda, recruiting and financing.
But he provided few specifics on how he would expand such efforts beyond those already underway.
My administration will aggressively pursue joint and coalition military operations to crush and destroy ISIS, Trump said in a speech in Youngstown, Ohio, using an acronym for the Islamic State. International cooperation to cut off their funding, expanded intelligence sharing and cyberwarfare to disrupt and disable their propaganda and recruiting .?.?. Its got to be stopped.

(30,058 posts)For the Muslim religion including Trump and they have hate for LGBT, don't even know why he would put this as his policy. Oh well, that was today, tomorrow is a new day.

(7,576 posts)what in the hell is an 'ideological test?" and if he is going to take aggressive action on so-called internal terrorists, is he going to have neighbor report on neighbor, family on family members? Sounds like Nazi Germany to me.

(3,051 posts)For example, one must still state you are not a current or former member of the Nazi party, and, back in the day, they looked for Nazis and people with Nazi beliefs.
Turning over access to social media, interviews with friends, family, banking records, etc., can uncover a lot of whackos. Not all, but certainly more than are looked out now.
I don't support Trump, remotely, but it's a good idea to not allow people with radical anti-Semitic, anti-LGTB, anti-women, etc beliefs into the country. Will such disproportionately affect Muslims? Probably. But screening for Nazis disproportionately affected Germans. There are no equal protection rights for immigration. It's whatever standard set by Congress.
I personally don't see anything not Progressive about trying to screen out people who are anathema to Progressive ideals.
Trump is just stealing policies that were originally Democrat ideas back in the 1960s. People forget that open door immigration was pushed by Republicans and big business (especially Southern agrabusiness) to create a permanent low-paid underclass and create a de facto slave class. It's why unions got destroyed and why there is so much unemployment (and low wages) among the low skilled workers.
I wouldn't let him get away with stealing the idea. It's not his.

(3,051 posts)And you are not going to catch everyone. But never let perfection get in the way of "better."
Currently, when you get someone who triggers a flag, they are supposed to delve into their social media (although Facebook fights this), bank records, property records, education, and have repeated interviews with the person, their family, and friends. Most times, something comes up. Won't catch everyone, of course. But most (or at least more).
I do admit some of my tepid support for this type of program (instituted by Hillary and not Trump who would make it a fiasco) has been the fact that I am readily identified by dress, name, and stereotypical looks (and accent) as Jewish.
I can't recall a serious anti-Semitic incident in my long life (I was in WWII) until the last 10 years, when they have started to occur on a fairly regular basis when in large cities, generally by people who are clearly middle eastern or northern African. Consistent name-calling, hard shoulders, hat knocked off, intentionally shoved by laughing teenagers (who called me a "f---g Joooo"when on the subway stairs), etc.
I'm not particularly keen on importing people who treat me and my family that way.
