Aetna pulls back on Obamacare health insurance plans in 2017

Source: Reuters

Aetna Inc, the No. 3 U.S. health insurer, on Monday said that due to persistent financial losses on Obamacare plans, it will sell individual insurance on the government-run online marketplaces in only four states next year, down from the current 15 states.

Aetna's decision follows similar moves from UnitedHealth Group Inc. and Humana Inc., which have cited similar concerns about financial losses on these exchanges created under President Barack Obama's national healthcare reform law.

Aetna is also trying to buy Humana and is currently fighting a U.S. government lawsuit aimed at blocking the $34 billion deal.

Aetna, which earlier this year said it was too soon to give up on the exchanges despite its challenges, this month signaled it was reconsidering. On Aug. 2, the company said it would not expand in 2017 and would review all its individual business.

more people will begin to support such a system.

I think greater numbers of our citizens are finally realizing that, as a country, we're being screwed.

They know already that we pay more for prescription drugs than any any other country and the realization that we spend more on health care with no clear advantage result-wise is beginning to sink in and that perhaps a bit more Socialism isn't such a bad idea after all.

Look at how much a gp gets in Germany versus here. Drugs are also in general substantially less. Hospitals charge a fraction of what they do here. We need a revolution in health care.

Aetna is currently in a dispute with the government over a 34 BILLION dollar buy-out of Humana. I can say pretty positively this Stopping to sell their insurance on the Obamacare run health exchanges is in retaliation to the government stopping the buy out. Aetna claims they are losing millions from too many sick people that bought insurance from them on the exchanges. Well, explain to me how in the hell can you make an offer of 34 BILLION for buy out and save face with the statement that they can not insure all the sick people without the government changing some regs so they would be able to make some bucks for all their stockholders??? It's called GREED!! And we have to get the god damn money out of politics because we know the politicians who take money from these health insurers will bend over backwards to get their donations!! So sad...

because they were being required to actually provide decent insurance to the people.
Frankly imo any insurance company like Aetna that doesnt want to provide insurance to the exchanges in states which they are already operating in should be denied from taking any federal tax deductions.
