John McLaughlin, The McLaughlin Group Host Since 1982, Dead at 89
Source: TV Line
John McLaughlin, the host of TVs The McLaughlin Group since its debut in January 1982, died on Tuesday at age 89.
The political commentators passing comes just days after he missed his first hosting of his eponymous syndicated public affairs program in more than 34 years.
I am under the weather, McLaughlin explained in a note that prefaced this past weekends telecast. His distinct, once-bellowing voice, heard in pre-taped intros, was weaker than usual, McLaughlin acknowledged. Yet my spirit is strong and my dedication to the show remains absolute!
McLaughlin had moderated the weekly round-table discussion of political issues since Day 1, but had actively participated in the conversation less frequently in recent months, sometimes merely introducing the next issue.

He loved to give Eleanor Clift a hard time.

(81,863 posts)That was his sign off. I liked watching his show years ago. I didn't get to see it much recently, but a lot of the same people were on it (Clift, Buchanon, etc). He was interesting.

(5,167 posts)I watched fairly faithfully, as recently as the week before last.
I didn't agree with his politics, but enjoyed the civil discussion, especially compared to much of what passes for politics today.
Funny the article didn't mention McLaughlin's marriage to Ann Lauenstein, who served in Reagan's Cabinet.

(5,299 posts)was that, while I disagreed with his views and his bombast, he spoke what he thought was an honest thought, and that while I may not care for it, there were people who loved him and will miss him, and to them I am truly sorry.
My second thought was: Oh, no! Who will give Pat Buchanan the airtime to try to normalize his Nazism now?

(52,253 posts)i can't recall anything earlier than his show where there would often be 3 righties vs. 1 lefty; or 2 righties, 1 lefty, and one moderate. and this was not counting himself, who was very much a righty himself. so at best there were 2 righties and 2 lefties, with a righty moderator.
then there was the shouting, now a staple of political discussion on-air, but at the time, any other show would have considered it incredibly rude.

(6,974 posts)I used to stop everything on Saturday evenings in the Los Angeles area (KNBC) just to watch the disagreements he and the late Jack Germond used to get into, and also listen to Elanor trying to get her 2 cents in when she could, and of course laughing as Morton Kondracke used to jump into the conversation and call himself trying to be the voice of reason
I will say that McLaughlin was an adult (Even though I thought he was wrong 90% of the time) unlike the childish, ignorant and extremely boorish D. tRump.
RIP Mr. McLaughlin.

Met him once when he came to my college. Thought then that he was an a**hole reich-winger of the neo-fascist variety. Haven't had to deviate much from that original assessment. His praise of Nixon was boundless, and I have no use for that sh*t. Won't miss him much, his right-wing bile even less.
