Police identify man shot and killed by deputy in Virginia

August 19, 2016

FAIRFAX, Va. (AP) — Police in a Virginia suburb of the nation's capital have identified a man shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy.

Fairfax County Police said Friday night that 29-year-old Jovany Martinez died early Tuesday after being shot the previous night outside Inova Fairfax Hospital. The statement said the man had charged a deputy with a sign post with a sharp end.

Police say another officer had encountered Martinez at a gas station Monday and noted he was behaving strangely. Authorities say the officer summoned paramedics, who took Martinez to the hospital.

Authorities say that after Martinez was discharged, he was seen carrying the sign post. Officers say Martinez swung the sign at the deputy and charged him. Police say the deputy fired several times, fatally wounding Martinez.

1. My guess:

Martinez was in a locked down psychiatric ward for three days which is the maximum amount of time they can hold you in such facilities against your will. He probably refused treatment or the treatment he received was insufficient. You probably can't regain control over a serious mental illness in three days. When released, he attacked the first cop he saw.

Now I'm going to go read the rest of the article.

On edit: Well, I guess that's all there is to the article. But I'm thinking that's how it went down.

I wish we would train our cops more thoroughly when it comes to handling the mentally ill. It would be more fair to everyone, and it is a matter of life or death.

I was in the emergency room almost a year ago when a mentally ill man was brought in for treatment by two cops. He was hostile and attempted to be violent. I was relieved to see how professionally the man was treated by the policemen. I think they had been trained to handle such situations.

Before this clip there is some background, but not much.

Patient Holding Sign Post Fatally Shot by Deputy at Inova Fairfax Hospital

Police say the man, who has not been identified, exhibited mental health issues prior to the shooting.

Three police officers arrived to the scene a short time later, and the suspect was taken to the hospital. Police said the man's injuries were initially thought to be non-life-threatening, but he later died.

Police say the deputy, an 18-year veteran, had undergone crisis intervention team training, which help law enforcement officers handle incidents involving people with mental health issues. He will be placed on routine administrative leave.

This link has a picture of the "sign post" and it would be a wicked weapon.

5. The "sharp object" was nothing more than weather stripping.

That if smacked over your head would result in little more than an knot and perhaps some bleeding.

7. To me it looks more like angled iron of the weight used for fence posts

Which can be a pretty nasty thing.

8. No, it was a metal sign post with an angled end. Very life-threatening if one were to be

speared by it.

Nor was he just waving it around and acting threatening - he'd already downed the hospital security guard.

Man should not have been released, obviously.

10. Which had the longer reach, a taser, or a sign post? What about pepper spray? A dirty look?

A disparaging word?

I had to down several strong drinks, then lie down for a while to recover from my fright, in addition to kissing a gun after seeing the picture of the "sign post." Don't know when I've been that terrified. I can only imagine what a policeman with all those various weapons might think.

Police: Man wielding 'edged weapon' dead after being shot by Fairfax County deputy
By Jeff Goldberg, ABC7 Monday, August 15th 2016

FAIRFAX, Va. (ABC7) — A man wielding an "edged weapon" is dead after being shot when he threatened a Fairfax County Sheriff's deputy near Inova Fairfax Hospital Monday evening, according to police.

The 29-year-old Jovany Martinez had been taken to Inova hospital earlier that afternoon, after he approached a police officer at a gas station on Little River Turnpike in Annandale, acting as if he was suffering from some sort of illness, according to Fairfax County Police.

"...the officer became concerned for Mr. Martinez as it appeared he was experiencing a medical emergency due to the extreme heat conditions and/or suffering from some form of mental health issue," Fairfax County Police said in a statement. The officer contacted Fairfax medics who transported Martinez to Inova Fairfax Hospital sometime after 2 p.m.

Police say Martinez was released later that evening. After he was discharged, authorities received two calls that a man was carrying a weapon at a bus stop near a hospital garage.
