California bill to repeal 'tampon tax' heads to governor

California lawmakers on Tuesday sent a bill to end state sales taxes on feminine hygiene products to Democratic Governor Jerry Brown, the latest success for a nationwide bipartisan effort to end the so-called tampon tax.
The bill, which would add tampons, sanitary napkins and other menstrual products to a list of necessities like food and prescription medicines that are not taxed, won unanimous support in the state Assembly on Tuesday, Democratic Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia said.
"Fundamentally, this is about gender equity and leveling the field," Garcia, who represents parts of suburban Los Angeles, said in a news release. "Every month, for 40 years of our lives, we are taxed for being born women."
At least 15 states have introduced legislation to repeal sales taxes on menstrual products. New York repealed its tax in June, joining Maryland, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and New Jersey.

(128,979 posts)Those products ain't cheap either. Good to hear PA has legislation introduced for this (hope it goes through). Am past the need but just the requirement for some product (not even including a tax and if one chooses not to use birth control for managing it) is an extra expense that women have had to bear.

(14,642 posts)I ask because of the "list of necessities like food and prescription medicines that are not taxed..." part in the OP. We pay sales tax on everything, almost 10% in my county. A little less for food, but food is still taxed at a high rate. I don't buy menstrual products, but I would guess they're taxed here at the higher rate. I know TN is a regressive state, but this seems outrageous.
Don't mean to be OT and I love what CA is doing.
