Paul LePage comes out against expanding background checks
Source: Sun Journal
PORTLAND Maine Gov. Paul LePage and National Rifle Association of America lobbyist Chris Cox say a Maine referendum designed to strengthen background checks is an affront to gun rights and individual liberties.
LePage, a Republican, and Cox spoke at a Maine Heritage Policy Center event in Portland on Wednesday. Both spoke out against a ballot initiative that Maine voters will consider this fall that requires background checks before gun transfers and sales between unlicensed firearm dealers.
Cox characterized the initiative as backed by out-of-state elites such as former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He says it's "about control."
Mainers for Responsible Gun Ownership is advocating for passage of the referendum. Deputy campaign manager Bobby Reynolds says it represents "a common sense initiative" that has support among many Maine gun owners.

(16,104 posts)Do you want to require background checks prior to the sale or transfer of firearms between individuals not licensed as firearms dealers, with failure to do so punishable by law, and with some exceptions for family members, hunting, self-defense, lawful competitions, and shooting range activity?

But Maine generally vies with New Hampshire for the lowest violent crime rate in the nation.
Like traffic signs and stoplights, I think the more densely populated an area is, the more things have to be regulated.
Maine is still a very rural state, so there's little chance for cars to bump into each other or for people to go crazy from the pressure of unnatural urban living or for an accidental firearm discharge to hit someone.
So maybe Maine residents and residents from other low crime rural states should be exempt.

" SUMMARY
This initiated bill requires a background check before a firearm sale or transfer
between individuals not licensed as firearm dealers. If neither party to a sale or transfer
has a federal firearms license, the parties meet at a licensed firearm dealer, who conducts
a background check on the transferee and completes the sale or transfer as though selling
or transferring from the dealer's own inventory. Exceptions to the background check
requirement are made for transfers between family members, while the parties are
hunting or sport shooting, for emergency self-defense, in the presence of the transferor
and in other circumstances."
