Students Suspended in NY Bus Monitor Bullying

Source: AP

Four seventh-grade boys from upstate New York who were caught on video mercilessly taunting a 68-year-old bus monitor have received their punishment.

The school system in the Rochester suburb of Greece says it will suspend the middle school students from school and from using regular bus transportation for a year.

The students will be transferred to a special alternative education program. The district is legally required to give the students an education.

Each student will also be required to complete 50 hours of community service with senior citizens.

They still receive an education, and they have to work with people in the same demographic as their victim. I hope they grow up as a result of this. May they learn compassion, and forever after fight for the underdog....

-Kick them out of the house, for starters. Let them learn the street to survive.
-Expulsion. Deny them the education they mock and take for granted.
-Ostracism from society. Let everyone know who they are so they can't get jobs.

All this for a year, maybe two. Let them learn the hard way.

1. They should be expelled for at least a year and held back 1 grade.

2. Ostracize- I believe this is one of the best possible answers to bullying. Treat them like sex offenders. Get a bully list and make them public.

The monitor said she didn't report them because they hadn't done anything like this before.

Middle school kids can be vicious -- incidents of this kind of behavior, sadly, are not uncommon.

I believe you are being sarcastic, so if you are, I have two questions:

1) Why are you defending bullies?
2) Where is your outrage that they did this to a 68 year old woman? Where is the respect for people these days?

Attacking a 68 year old woman, figuring they would never be touched. They should be dumped on the street.

I remember being bullied in school. The Bullies KNEW admin would do nothing.

You know when that changed? When I took on all three and beat the crap out of them, for all the beatings and verbal abuse, vicious pranks I had taken. THEN admin suddenly noticed, despite the tons of complaints my parent had placed.

Mom put me in martial arts and two years later I defended myself.

Admin tried to have me suspended. That didn't go anywhere. Not with the paper trail my parent left.

So the hell with the Bullies.

criminal thugs. Jr. high is a brutal place for boys and girls alike and they need to learn, during those years, that people have feelings, emotions, and are not to be mocked, bullied, or ridiculed for being human. May they learn their lessons.

The first (native) peoples of this continent had/have the best idea: send them (sentence them) to live on their own in the wilderness, with no support from their families or friends for the duration of the sentence. If they can live with themselves, they might be fit to join society.

just based on the raw numbers, some DU'ers kids are being rude/mean/crude right now and they don't even know it.

At the mall behind a 300 pound man chanting "ba bump, ba bump, ba bump" as he walks...

Texting nasty things about one of their teachers back and forth...

I would not want this group around vulnerable seniors without constant supervision.

The boys and their families have admitted wrongdoing and agreed to the suspensions without a hearing.

Granted things like this undoubtedly happen a lot more often than people realize. But it still sends a message that bullying will not be tolerated while at the same time recognizing that these l...ittle 7th graders are not unreedeemable. They will still have chance to turn things around and make something of themselves. Mrs. Klein probably did luck out a bit financially. But, so what? She has been working for years at a thankless job for a mere $15,500 per year. Now she can enjoy a fantastic vacation with her family and a comfortable retirement. Not everyone is so lucky. But that is no excuse to begrudge a hardworking soul for having such a stroke of good fortune rising out of moments of torment. Good for her.

And I do hope those those little boys do recognize that somethings are not acceptable - even for children their age. I hope they grow up into fine decent adults and this turns out to be a positive turning point in their lives. I also hope that the whole issue of bullying now gets the attention it has for so long deserved. This may not happen quite as often to a senior citizen - but it happens all the time when children torment other children. What we saw in that 10 minute video happens to children by children every single day in every community in Ameica and around the world.
