John Lennon's Killer Mark Chapman Denied Parole Again
Source: Sky News
John Lennon's killer Mark Chapman has been denied parole for the ninth time since the former Beatle's murder stunned the world in 1980.
The New York state Board of Parole announced its decision in relation to Chapman, 61, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is serving a sentence of 20 years to life in western New York's Wende Correctional Facility.
The parole board noted that Chapman - who shot and killed the star outside New York's Dakota building - has described the murder as "selfish and evil".
But it concluded that his contrition and other factors supporting his release were outweighed by the premeditated and "celebrity-seeking" nature of the crime.

(11,527 posts)As someone else mentioned, I'll not mention this person's name. He took away one of the greatest musicians, and one of the greatest people, the world has ever known.

(57,333 posts)have atoned for his murdering another human being and released, wouldn't that be the true intention of a "correctional system"?
(As an aside: Think how easy it is to sentence an innocent person to prison for life than it is to sentence him to death. Think of how many innocent life prisoners pled down from a Capital charge.)
At some point Mark Chapman should be released from prison because enough time is enough time. Particularly because he was crazy as opposed to criminal.

(16,191 posts)The man was suffering from a now-treated mental illness, shuns the media, and is by all accounts genuinely rehabilitated and shows contrition for his actions. Somehow, I don't think that Lennon would agree with those who want this guy locked away forever as some sort of revenge.
The only rational purpose for prisons is to restrain those who are violent and a danger to our communities, while we treat them and help them to change their behavior so they can return to society. Hating Chapman, and punishing him as an extension of that hatred, is missing the great message that Lennon delivered to us: Love is the answer. Hatred, anger and revenge are anathema to his message, and are counter to his mission.
Lennon would want the world to forgive.

(20,220 posts)I think that's valid, considering the nature of his crime. There are an awful lot of people who are non-compliant with their meds. She's 83 and won't live forever. Perhaps after she dies, Sean will feel differently about his release.

(6,241 posts)releasing all the prisoners. Some people are in prison because they did some terrible things. MS-13 doesn't want truth or justice. Someone that stabs someone to death over a card game doesn't need love and care.

I don't know enough about Chapman to know whether he deserves to be freed, but I have no doubt that some people can be rehabilitated.
