Republican nominee Donald Trump said Monday that if he is not elected as the U.S. president Israel would cease to exist as a country because of the Iranian nuclear deal.
Trump told labor leaders in Cleveland on Monday, according to The Columbus Dispatch that the deal to slow down Irans nuclear programme in return for the lifting of a crippling international sanctions regime on the Islamic Republics economy is going to destroy Israelunless I get elected. He added: Then Israel will be just fine.
Irans conservative religious leadership has routinely called for Israels destruction and the chief of Israels foreign intelligence service, Mossad, has said that the nuclear deal will increase the threat that Israel faces.
Israeli officials view that Irans extra revenue from the lifting of sanctions, estimated to be in the billions, will inevitably be used to fund groups opposed to Israel, such as Lebanese militant group Hezbollah and Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Sec. Moniz .... if he isn't the best in the world @ this stuff then the list of people who
are as good or better is pretty damn small.

Early life and education[edit]
Moniz was born in 1944 in Fall River, Massachusetts, to Georgina (Pavão) Moniz and Ernest Perry Moniz, both of whose parents were Portuguese immigrants from São Miguel Island, Azores.[5] He graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River, Massachusetts in 1962, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and was the president of the school's math club.[6] Moniz attended Boston College, where he received his Bachelor of Science summa cum laude in physics. He received his PhD in theoretical physics from Stanford University in 1972.[7][8]
Career[edit]
Moniz joined the faculty of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1973, serving as Head of the Department of Physics from 1991 to 1995 and as Director of the Bates Linear Accelerator Center.[9] He also co-chairs the MIT research council. He served in the Clinton administration as Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the Executive Office of the President from 1995 to 1997.[10] Moniz also worked in the United States Department of Energy, serving as Under Secretary of Energy from 1997 to 2001.[11] Moniz is also one of the founding members of The Cyprus Institute, wherein he and other scholars undertook the coordination, research and planning of the project. In 2013, he received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Universidad Pontificia Comillas de Madrid as a recognition of his research on energy policies and technologies.[12]

(4,461 posts)We would be foolish to assume Iran doesn't have their own versions of idiot psychos like Cheney, Rumsfeld, et al., who infest their government bureaucracy and will never give up their desires to join the nuclear club. You just can't dangle that level of power in front of world leaders and not expect them to keep reaching for it - no matter how many times their hand is slapped.
Don't get me wrong. I support the agreement and the lifting of the sanctions - any effort to engage the people, I think, is good. And I respect Moniz ans the others who made it happen. But the instability of that region means we can only assume things to a reasonably foreseeable but still quite uncertain extent. My personal opinion is that they will eventually get the weapons no matter what the rest of the world does.

(70,506 posts)And by the shear scale and nature of what it takes to process material into weapons grade
(highly enriched) material you can not do it and keep it secret. Both ways to make weapons
grade material are closed down to Iran now. ( either enriching uranium in centrifuges or by
making plutonium in a breeder reactor) The agreement gives the IAEA full access to every place
in Iran and because we are talking about radioactive materials you can't hide what you have been
doing.
Now they might buy some bomb grade material on the blackmarket but that would be enough for only one or two
bombs and using them would be suicide ..... besides Israel tends to kill any engineer or physicist who gets
anywhere close to making a bomb in Iran.

(19,477 posts)My parents were convinced that Jimmy Carter was anti-semitic and anti-Israel, so they supported Reagan. In 2000, my father told me he supported Bush, using the same logic. Same thing again in 2008. If he were still alive, he'd be supporting Trump for the same reason.
Fortunately, I think people like my father are a small and diminishing part of American Jewry. Or maybe not, given that the Haredim align with the Republican right wing and are a growing percentage of the US Jewish population.

Iran has even less 'friends', Russia? what a good buddie Russia is. When they're done helping Assad exterminate its citizens perhaps Russia will invade and take over Irans seaport.
