U.S. House Republicans to discuss whether to impeach IRS chief

Source: Reuters

U.S. House of Representatives Republicans will hold a special conference next week to discuss whether the nation's top tax collector, Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen, should be impeached, House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Wednesday.

"This is something that we're going to have a planning conference on next week and we're going to discuss among our members, and the members are going to vote the way they want to vote on this," Ryan told reporters.

House conservatives are pushing for impeachment, saying Koskinen failed to comply with a congressional investigation into IRS actions applying extra scrutiny to conservative groups' applications for tax exempt status between 2010 and 2012.

The House Republican leadership has demonstrated no enthusiasm for impeaching Koskinen. He became IRS commissioner in December 2013, after the controversy already had exploded over the way the agency had handled the applications for tax exempt status.

Convenient timing for the Rethugs to send out their impeachment talking point right about now. Hmmm. Coincidence?

And, the IRS is an old, reliable whipping boy. I cannot believe the desperation so close to Labor Day.

Really all of the fed govt.

From the IRS, to the problems at the VA, to immigration, the Fed Employee data breach, to yes even why Secretaries of State have to use other email systems the common theme is that technology used by the Federal Government is horrific due to a complete lack of funding for years.

The IRS system can't keep emails older than 6 months AND they are still using magnetic tape to store return records.

By federal law, groups that are political in nature CAN NOT BE TAX EXEMPT. There is, IIRC, a dividing line - any large group that does Good Works does a little bit of political activity just to accomplish its mission, so the feds will let you be tax exempt if 49 percent or less of your work is political. The Tea Party is a loosely-connected network of political groups, so the IRS needs to closely scrutinize them to see if they meet the requirements for tax exemption.

Sorry, children: You have the constitutional right to try overthrowing the government. I have an equal constitutional right to not pay for you doing it.
