University of Oregon scrubs name of KKK leader from building

Source: NY Daily News

It was about time.

The University of Oregon has finally decided to remove the name of a KKK leader from one of its campus dormitories.

University President Michael Schill announced the decision Thursday and said the college’s board of trustees unanimously concluded that Frederic Dunn — a classics professor by day and an “exalted cyclops” of the Ku Klux Klan by night — no longer deserved to have his name emblazoned across a student dorm.

“It would be inconsistent with our values to have a building named after an exalted cyclops of the Ku Klux Klan,” Schill told the Register-Guard.

Should his name be removed from the public sphere entirely? Should all buildings / landmarks bearing his name be changed?

A foolish consistency is often a convenient method of advertising to others how clever we pretend to be. Context, nuance and relevance are all ignored in our quest for self-validation.

The poster said the following. "We shouldn't honor a single KKK P.O.S.". He said nothing about renouncing anything. I was looking for a clarification.

Incidently, had Mr Dunn renounced his previous association, would that have made a difference ? Do you know for a fact he didn't?

If not, then best to assume he didn't change his views.

If he did renounce it, made it public and worked to rectify the damage such views have, then yes. Are you saying that people can't change?

" In his last autobiography, Byrd explained that he was a KKK member because he "was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision — a jejune and immature outlook — seeing only what I wanted to see because I thought the Klan could provide an outlet for my talents and ambitions." Byrd also said, in 2005, "I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened."

past the 1970s?

Why are you using what is essentially the same argument that the alt-right were using against Hillary(because of her association with Byrd) when she criticized them for being racist?

finally Deaddy and Dunn Halls renamed. Well at least they did it. Dunn an exalted cyclops of a trumpenfuhrer group, and Deady was quoted as saying "as long as the coloreds are among us, they should be slaves". A pro slavery federal judge. This is the reason america is steeped in racism. From the national anthem to these type clowns who were/are revered everything points to the underlying infection still causing eruptions of putrid boils, Cultural complications of american SLAVERY. We really are still fighting for freedom from the white racist mentality. Damn, what a fucking centuries long uphill battle still going on all because certain people WILL NOT forcefully address the underlying cultural abcess of the slavery and its ongoing cultural ramifications as represented currently by the vocal minority of trumpenfuhrer followers. Trumpenfuhrer is a perfect example of the cultural consequences of NEVER REALLY dealing with the racism of white americans toward any other color of skin, especially black and brown. They need to be peer shamed back into the toilets from whence they came by the majority will of anti-racist whites. Happened once, MLK brought that together.
