Obama: Congress veto override of 9/11 lawsuits bill 'a mistake'

US President Barack Obama has said Congress made a "mistake" by overriding his veto and pushing through a bill that allows legal action against Saudi Arabia over the 9/11 attacks.
He said the bill would set a "dangerous precedent" for individuals around the world to sue the US government.
Wednesday's vote was the first time Mr Obama's veto power was overruled.
CIA Director John Brennan agreed that the bill carried "grave implications" for national security.

a long time. Diplomatic immunity, recognition of passports and the like.
I think this is election time posturing, to be revisited when the dust settles.

(10,437 posts)matter of policy....Saudi Arabia is still an ally....setting the precedent to sue in foreign entities/people in US courts will not end well

(13,340 posts)... it wouldn't stop a suit. And we only pay to victims we acknowledge were collateral damage. This would do nothing to protect us from people we considered legitimate targets filing suits.

Clogging the courts will keep lawsuits against U.S. corporations to a minimum - that could be one goal.
