In rebuke of Gov. Rick Scott, judge grants voter registration extension

Source: Tampa Bay Times

TALLAHASSEE — A judge on Monday extended Florida's voter registration deadline by one more day, through Wednesday, because of Hurricane Matthew, calling it "irrational" for the state to reject the idea.

U.S. District Judge Mark Walker granted the Florida Democratic Party's request for a temporary restraining order, which included a rebuke of Gov. Rick Scott, a Republican, who had refused to extend the deadline past its scheduled expiration of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

"Quite simply, it is wholly irrational in this instance for Florida to refuse to extend the voter registration deadline when the state already allows the governor to suspend or move the election date due to an unforeseen emergency," Walker wrote in a 16-page order. "If aspiring eligible Florida voters are barred from registering to vote, then those voters are stripped of one of our most precious freedoms."

The Democrats' lawsuit also asserted that the suspension of mail delivery at the height of the storm could result in some voter registration forms not reaching election offices by Tuesday, disenfranchising more Florida residents.

Name on the ballot would need to be changed, I bet Scott would have allowed this to happen without a problem.

verbatim quote of Rick Scott on October 7:

"I'm not going to extend it. If you, if you... whether it's the registration date, you hadn't, everybody has had a lot of time to register, so, uh... On top of that, y'know, we've got lots of opportunities to vote, uh, early voting, abs'ee voting, and election day, so I don't intend to make any changes."

In my best Nelson voice: "HA HA!"

Florida's voter registration deadline extended

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- A federal judge has granted a Democratic request to extend the voter registration deadline in Florida due to Hurricane Matthew.

The Florida Democratic Party filed a federal lawsuit Sunday against Gov. Rick Scott and the state's top election officials to extend the voter registration deadline, which had been set for Tuesday, October 11. The lawsuit was filed after Governor Scott publicly turned down a request from Democrats to extend the deadline.

The judge's order extends the voter registration deadline to Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at 5 p.m.

A hearing is scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. to determine if the deadline will be extended further.

How the hell he avoided that and then managed to get himself elected Gov, not once, but TWICE is beyond me.

When Romney lost that last election, the "Teaparty Patriots" in Ocala and the Villages cried their little hearts out in stunned disbelief while I laughed my ass off in Gainesville, an island of sanity in the Red Sea. This was about the same time the "Citizen's Grand Jury" had billboards up saying they had indited Barrack Obama for "treason" and yet Obama won all Florida's considerable Electoral votes.

Something didn't add up with the demographics that's for sure. Not into CT myself but ironically, Florida uses machine voting with no paper trail now ever since Gore almost won that one election. No more of them pesky re-counts 'cause that one was too close for the Repugs.

Lucky for brother Bush, our impartial SCOTUS stopped it just in time.

Republicans campaigning against Gov. Rick Scott's incentive program

<snip>

"Gov. Rick Scott’s push for millions of dollars to recruit businesses to Florida is taking a beating on the campaign trail.

But it’s not just Democrats slamming the Republican governor’s signature policy issue. In debates and forums, Republicans are making it abundantly clear Scott will have trouble getting the $85 million he wants for Enterprise Florida to recruit more companies to move to Florida."

<snip>

"Scott’s pitch for incentive money has already received a big thumbs down from incoming Florida House Speaker Richard Corcoran, R-Land O’Lakes.

“There will not be any corporate welfare in the House budget,” Corcoran said after Scott initially requested the $85 million for Enterprise Florida."

Minnesota is in the running for the highest voter turnout of all the states.

People can show up on election day, register, and vote. No voter ID laws. A person can have another registered voter vouch for them and that is adequate. Anyone can vote by absentee ballot. It is a blue state.

May this high standard of voting be in all states.
