Ashura festival attack kills Shia Muslims at Afghan mosque

At least 14 people have been killed in an attack on a shrine in Kabul, as Shia Muslims prepared for a religious festival.
A crowd had gathered at the Karte Sakhi shrine in Afghanistan's capital to celebrate Ashura, a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Hussein, a grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Eyewitnesses reported an explosion and gunfire in the area.
The shrine at Karte Sakhi is one of Kabul's largest.

(33,400 posts)Our strategy after 9/11 was really dumb. We should have assaulted Tora Bora ourselves, killed or captured all Al Qaeda we could, and got the fuck out. The Taliban would have let us if we'd allowed them to remain in power.
Bush was never willing to the heavy lifting of an occupation (massive troop:civilian ratios), and we weren't willing to brutally suppress the Pashtun population. With their ongoing ISI support and havens in Pakistan, we could not defeat the Taliban's guerilla war. The current government and army clearly cannot, either.

Ain't stopping anytime soon. Partitioning Afghanistan is probably the best solution for all non-Pashtun.
