Congressman Barney Frank weds in same-sex marriage

Sat Jul 7, 2012 8:19pm EDT

By Tim McLaughlin

BOSTON (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic Representative Barney Frank wed his longtime partner, James Ready, on Saturday, becoming the first sitting congressman to enter into a same-sex marriage.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick officiated the ceremony and added some levity by saying Frank, 72, and Ready, 42, had vowed to love each other through Democratic and Republican administrations alike, and even through appearances on Fox News, according to Al Green, a Democratic congressman from Texas.

"Barney was beaming," said Green, who attended the ceremony. He added that Frank, a champion of gay rights and the sweeping reform of Wall Street, shed a tear during the ceremony.

After exchanging their vows, Frank and Ready embraced each other, Green said. "It was no different than any other wedding I've attended when you have two people who are in love with each other," Green said.

IT was perhaps fitting that Representative Barney Frank met his future husband, Jim Ready, at a political fund-raiser in 2005.

“I told him I had a crush on him for 20 years,” said Mr. Ready, recalling that meeting.

And what did Mr. Frank make of that? “That I’m being rewarded for coming to this fund-raiser,” he said with a laugh.

Mr. Frank, 72, and Mr. Ready, 42, were married in Newtown, Mass., on Saturday in a low-key ceremony on the banks of the Charles River. Gov. Deval L. Patrick of Massachusetts officiated. The guests included Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic House minority leader, as well as Senator John Kerry and Representatives Dennis J. Kuchinich and Steny H. Hoyer.

A lot of romances and marriages last far fewer than 20 years, which I would consider "many." So why not wish them the best?

I guess I've learned today (I'm one of the younger folks who post here) what not to say whenever i hear of old people getting married. And I respect Frank for the Dodd-Frank bill and breaking ground in the gay rights movement (by being the first openly gay member of Congress as well as the first sitting MoC to be married as such) so I apologize deeply if my concerns in that post triggered fear.

...my mother was reunited with the love of her life at the age of 81. He's ten years younger than her, and they're laughing, having fun, doing exactly what they want all day long. It taught me that you'll never know what might happen. Maybe the best is yet to come.

Speaking the language of "the Lake'' in Newton's Nonantum

I love the Italian festival they run every summer, very fun stuff.

I lived in West Newton before we moved here - it was nice being near the Lake, and also Waltham.

It's not their problem, if they love each other then who should care?

But I've always had some kind of weird mental issue with couples where one of them is DRASTICALLY older than the other. It just weirds me out for some reason. But, eh... that's my problem.

Barney is a sort of rock star so he gets the younger men. Very like straights. Melissa Etheridge married a much younger woman, too. Some things are the same regardless.

This will show that young boys who crush on older men can one day marry them. 30 year age differences will soon be a thing of the past.
