Cummings On Comey Letter: He Knew GOP Would Go After 'Any Misstep'

Source: Talking Points Memo

-snip-

During an interview on CNN's "New Day," Cummings first said that he was surprised Comey would release a "vague" letter about newly discovered emails so close to the election.

"I was surprised that the director, who has told our committee on several occasions that his number one concern is his reputation, that he would issue a letter that, number one, was so vague. And that, basically, gave Donald Trump a softball to hit over the fence. And he knew, I’m sure, that this is exactly what Donald Trump would do. He would exaggerate," Cummings said. But the congressman also said he was not completely shocked by Comey's letter considering the way Republicans on the Hill reacted to his July decision not to recommend charges against Clinton.

"It doesn’t surprise me, though, in a way that he did this. Because I don’t think the American people have a clue as to how hard the Republicans, particularly on my committee, have been on the FBI," he said.

Cummings noted that Republicans in Congress loved Comey before he did not recommend charges for Clinton, at which point the House GOP "suddenly turned against him."

If you can't stand the heat, get the fuck out of the kitchen!

You said repeatedly that your reputation is the most important thing to you. Well, we all know now that is complete BS. You had to know how your letter would be received. You were going to get hammered by one side or the other, so you decided to do the totally WRONG thing, break with FBI and DOJ long-standing, the advice of your own people and top dogs at the DOJ and risk criminal charges for violating the Hatch Act and release your stupid letter 12 days before the election, rather than standing on your supposed integrity and waiting until you knew whether there was any there there.

You can now watch your reputation and your career go down in flames. If you still have a job by COB on Wed., Nov 9 I will be very surprised. But I guess you can take your 'integrity' and go take a cushy lobbyist job over on K Street and carry water for whoever you want to whore yourself to. Oh, and along with all those papers you won't be able to carry out of your office when you leave, don't worry there won't be any reputation or integrity left to worry about.

Democrats are partisan but they are not scorched earth.

He probably made the assumption that there was a better than average chance that the GOP would retain control of congress, and if he did not bend over backwards in assisting them in anything they could spin against Clinton that
they would seek revenge on him and do him like they are doing Clinton, or how they go after even conservative judges when they dare to make a decision in conflict with their ideology.

The Democrats are more liberal than they were in the Clinton era, but in general they still mostly govern and operate like both parties used to. Meaning they are more likely to just move on after a fight like this and not hold vendettas against the director.

So he probably weighed that and felt it was better for his career to have the dems giving him crap during the election and then forgetting about it, then the GOP trying to end his career at all costs.

Look at Fisk during the Whitewater thing. He basically said that he couldn't find anything incriminating, and the GOP removed him because and put Ken Starr in, more partisan and he basically conducted an ongoing investigation that ran the entire length of the Clinton years.

So Comey threw them a little Ken Starr so he wouldn't be removed or targeted somehow, knowing that the Dems would probably forgive him.

It's sort of sad really that the GOP is becoming like one of the parties in a dysfunctional country like Sudan or something.

consumption ,knowing full well, there is more here that we are not seeing. Being Minority Chairman of his Committee,he has insight as to what is really going on and who the real players are. Something says there is some heavy money playing here.

Mercer Family(hedge fund) is spending Millions on Trump and spent a few millions on the Brexit Vote, and this smells like what the Mellon/Scaife crew did with their Arkansas Project.

I have great admiration for Paul Wellstone; and I think he would have gone on to become a great Senate Majority Leader and, possibly, POTUS.

(I don't think it was a coincidence that he was threatened by Dick Cheney shortly before that very suspicious plane crash)
