Emergency managers shop schools to charter operators; teachers fear future
By Corey Williams
Associated Press

Detroit — Thousands of laid-off Michigan public school teachers don't know if they will have jobs waiting for them when classes resume this fall in their state-run districts.

Detroit is expected to slice 800 teachers from its ranks by recalling only 3,300 of 4,100 teachers who received layoff notices earlier this year. Meanwhile, their counterparts in Muskegon Heights and Highland Park must wait until companies are selected to run them as charter systems.

Who and how many get hired is up to the charter operators.

-snip-

State-appointed emergency managers have shopped Muskegon Heights schools in West Michigan and the Highland Park district near Detroit to interested charter operators as part of plans to pull the educational systems from near-fiscal ruin.

the mortgage scandal, the foreclosure crisis, the bailout, the LIBOR scandal, the emergency financial managers, the union-busting, etc....

it seems like it's all going as planned.

On edit: Revealing the scandals wasn't planned, but the scandals were.

We are always in emergency mode with kids who are homeless, who have crack addicts as parents, who are in 12th gr. reading on the 3rd gr. level, who are truant, who sell drugs to make a living b/c their parents can't, who are pregnant and fathers at 15---the list goes on.

Many teachers take these kids under their wings and provide a lot of extras in attempting to keep the kids on track. And not one teacher is making anywhere near this kind of money.

Yeah. Crickets.

At least under bush, Democrats fought against shit like this. Now that our guy supports it, Democrats cave and pretend liberal politicians have cover to crush unions, bash teachers, and steal from children. That used to be only a republican kind of thing.

George Bush, Obama gave it the kiss of death. It has needed surgical reform, instead its been gutted. We lost control of education for the same corrupt reasons as the demise of a functioning Congress-money.

but there were still enough Democrats to fight him on it. It took the Obama administration to finally bring grover norquist's and bill bennet's dream to life.

I never want to see another republican administration in my life, not even one that calls itself Democrat. This is one of those things like nixon to China. Had we lost in 2008, many things would be worst, but we wouldn't have had our schools, our teachers, and out children sold off this way. Without a Democrat calling for this travesty, the party I have worked for for 40+ years would have fought this to the death. Now my party just shrugs and makes bill bennet grin. Fuck the union. Fuck the children. There are corporations to please.

Their education has been sold to the lowest bidder, they know it and so do we. I can't tell you how sorry the teachers feel about it. Few believe teachers have a heart these days.

We're all so sorry.......

the emergency managers.

Only a fascist could defend the emergency manager laws in the way they are being implemented.

Watch and wait. I'm sure a Usual Suspect will chime in soon to tell us how wonderful and necessary their rightwing douchebaggery really is.

either. Yet we continue to get laid off and have no guaranteed tenure or benefits. And this administration has not gone after those responsible for those things. Mozillo still walks around free. The ex-CEOs that caused all of those epic fails still walk around free, while keeping all of their millions and billions they reaped while screwing the rest of us. Explain to me why Obama is BFFs with the CEO of GE Capital who, btw, paid zero in corporate income taxes. It seems really off to me when a CEO makes more money than their multi million billion dollar company pays in taxes every year.
