Oscar-winning film star Ernest Borgnine dies
Source: AP
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the best-actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in "Marty" in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.
His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side.
Borgnine, who endeared himself to a generation of Baby Boomers with the 1960s TV comedy "McHale's Navy," first attracted notice in the early 1950s in villain roles, notably as the vicious Fatso Judson, who beat Frank Sinatra to death in "From Here to Eternity."
Then came "Marty," a low-budget film based on a Paddy Chayefsky television play that starred Rod Steiger. Borgnine played a 34-year-old who fears he is so unattractive he will never find romance. Then, at a dance, he meets a girl with the same fear.

What a good egg was Ernest Borgnine ... and what life. He was married to Ethel Merrman for about a month; he said in an interview I saw that she couldn't stand his popularity as McHale and that was that.

NO!!!!!! I liked Ernest and gosh darn did that man live a long life when so many left before him.
I remember back some 30 years ago while in college, I was channel surfing on my 13" B&W TV and stumbled on his movie "Marty". I think that was probably the first movie that I had ever recall watching that I considered a "tear jerker".
R.I.P. dear sir. In your own unassuming way, you have graced both film and television with your humor and graciousness and made the medium enjoyable.

It also reminded me that Kirk Douglas is still around. And hopefully for a good while longer.

Borgnine was classic in that one, and it was wonderful seeing all of the 'old' greats together in one place.

Four years ago, he waded into the discussion about the merits of the movie "Brokeback Mountain," the first film to feature A-list talent in a gay love story. As Borgnine told Entertainment Weekly, "I didnt see it and I dont care to see it. I know they say its a good picture, but I dont care to see it." Then he added, "If John Wayne were alive, hed be rolling over in his grave!"

His character Dutch clearly has deep and tender feelings for gang leader Pike. It is demonstrated throughout the movie; he even dies reaching for, and calling out Pike's name.

(62,530 posts)years ago when I was living in an apt in Sherman Oaks, the manager was a guy named Chris Borgnine.
I had to ask. And sure enough he was Mr. Borgnines son.
A few months passed and I was walking to the pool one day and lo and behold, there is Mr. Borgnine.
I couldn't let the chance go by.
So as polite as I could, I excused myself and told Mr. Borgnine just how much I enjoyed and loved his acting.
He was the nicest guy in the whole world. We spoke about 10 minutes.
Thanks Mr. Borgnine! You will be missed!
