Democrats Leadership Fight Pits West Wing Against Left Wing

Source: The New York Times

WASHINGTON — Struggling to respond to Donald J. Trump’s victory, a group of shellshocked Democrats moved swiftly to endorse Representative Keith Ellison of Minnesota for chairman of the Democratic National Committee, hoping that he would be a fresh face for a party with a depleted bench.

But after steadily adding endorsements from leading Democrats in his bid to take over the party, Mr. Ellison is encountering resistance from a formidable corner: the White House.

In a sign of the discord gripping the party, President Obama’s loyalists, uneasy with the progressive Mr. Ellison, have begun casting about for an alternative, according to multiple Democratic officials close to the president.

The battle pits the titans of the Democratic Party against one another, with Mr. Obama’s camp at odds with figures like Chuck Schumer, the new Senate Democratic leader, and Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.

I spoke to a DNC member last week; big concern that Ellison won't be full time Chair (as required by Party by-laws).

Schultz, Kaine. So what's the White House's complaint? It SHOULD be full time? I've heard this is an important attribute.

But as far as sticking it to the repukes, he's an excellent choice.

We need a full time Chairperson. As nice as Rep Ellison is, we need a FULL time Chair. As Howard Dean said, it's a 80 hour a week job, not a 30 hour part time job.

If we want to ever get this country back on the right track, we need to have real democrats, not Blue-Dogs, not middle of the roaders. We need Bernie Sanders democrats.

besides, with republicons controlling the House, they don't spend much time there anyway. 2-3 day workweeks with 3-7 week breaks.

Ellison could easily do the job.

By having a dual party chair. One who is the face and direction and the other, who will work and implement that direction full time. To really rebuild, we need all hands on deck and Rep. Ellison can't do service to his constituents and the needs of our party by himself.
