MADISON (WKOW) -- Green Party Presidential Nominee Jill Stein is seeking to raise $2.5 million by late Friday afternoon in order to pay for presidential election recounts in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania - three states narrowly won by Republican President-Elect Donald Trump.
On a fundraising page launched early Wednesday afternoon, the Stein campaign indicates it wants recounts in those three states because "data suggests significant discrepancies in vote totals."
Results show Trump won Wisconsin by 27,257 votes over Democratic Nominee Hillary Clinton, a margin of just 1 percent.
According to WEC Administrator Mike Haas, the agency has no discretion on whether to conduct the recount if Stein's campaign pays for it - unless there is intervening court litigation to stop it..................

This professor's theory is the reason @DrJillStein is asking for a recount in WI, MI, PA.

(43,182 posts)it would harm him if he lost
and we wouldn't want to count the votes. It might reveal
the election was rigged, just like Trump promised it would be.

Jill Stein just called to say that I am the first one to be informed that the Green Party is formally petitioning for a recount in 3 states, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Trumps margin is less that 11,600 in Michigan, 27,200 in Wisconsin and 68,000 in Pennsylvania. If just a few thousand votes are found in Wisconsin and Michigan, Hillary Clinton becomes president by 276 electoral votes verses 264 for Trump
Stein told me Were filing in Wisconsin Friday because the votes were cast on proven hack-prone machines. This has been a hack-ridden election. She said that it will be most difficult to recount the machines in Pennsylvania. When asked why the democrats are not bringing this action, Stein told this reporter that Democrats do not act to protect the vote even when there is dramatic evidence of tampering.
The Green Party told us that Stein will be represented by experienced voting rights attorneys John Bonifaz, Boston, MA and Robert Fitrakis, Columbus, OH.
Stein said, our voting system is on life support. The presidential candidate also said, The Green Party will continue to be the go to advocate for voting rights. That includes fighting vote suppression tactics such as the Interstate Crosscheck system.
Interstate Crosscheck is the program which wrongly purged hundreds of thousand of minority voters in this election, according to the investigation this reporter for Rolling Stone Magazine. For more on the theft of the 2016 election visit thebestdemocracymoneycanbuy.com and gregpalast.com

(28 posts)Let's say I just happened to have $2.5mill sitting around the living room, making a mess, getting in the way, and needed it to go. I couldn't ask for a recount as I am nobody, just a voter from another state. Does she, as a third party candidate whose name was on the ballet, have the right to call for an audit?
If she's within her legal rights to do so, I say fund it, but I'd like some info regarding whether or not she's able to do this.
ucrdem
(15,512 posts)I'm assuming that's what gives her standing in MI but every state has its own rules so maybe these are the only 3 that allow it?
Ohio: Automatic recount if the difference between the top two candidates is less than 0.25 percent
Pennsylvania: Automatic recount when vote margin is less than 0.5 percent. Voters can petition county boards for a recount. Voters or candidates can petition courts for a recount.
Wisconsin: Any candidate can request a recount within three days of completion of the initial tally. The recount is free to the requesting candidate if the margin of victory is less than 0.5 percent, otherwise it must be paid for in advance.
Florida: A margin of victory of 0.5 percent or less triggers an automated recount of votes tallied by machine. If that re-tabulation cuts the margin to .25 percent or less, a hand recount is ordered of ballots showing undervotes or overvotes, only if they are numerous enough to potentially alter the outcome.

(28 posts)My Google-fu was failing me... seems she can in MI, PA, and WI no problem. OH/FL seems like a stretch, not in legality of an audit, but in the margin of votes.

(15,512 posts)This isn't going to be easy and to change anything she'll need to take it to the SC. But it's a different court than in 2000 and there's a fair chance she'll win if she gets that far.

(28 posts)This might be a better tactic than having HRC take it head on. Not sure of the legality of who can call an audit/recount, but if she is able to do so, great! It would pull the heat off of the Dems for bringing up the discrepancies and then let the results of the audit speak for themselves.
She's a political beast who did her best to pile on to the Clinton Hate Machine and that leaves me conflicted as to her true motives.
However, what ever the reason, an audit would be in the best interest of our democracy and hopefully begin the process of securing our votes and discourage people who have a desire to manipulate our election systems.

Pennsylvania recount: Green Partys Jill Stein launches $2.5 million fundraiser

Updated, 2:50 p.m.
The Green Partys Jill Stein has launched a last-minute bid to raise millions of dollars to demand a recount in Pennsylvania, as well as in Michigan and Wisconsin.
On a fundraising page, Steins campaign said it needs to raise $2.5 million by Friday at 5 p.m. ET. It was not immediately clear what would happen to the donations if the fundraiser didnt reach its goal. (The Incline has reached out to Steins campaign.)
After seeing compelling evidence of voting anomalies, the Stein/Baraka Green Party Campaign is launching an effort to ensure the integrity of our elections, the fundraising call reads:
.................
......................
The call for a recount gained mainstream traction yesterday, after New York Magazine reported that a group of computer scientists and election lawyers has urged the Clinton campaign to call for a recount in those three crucial states. The group, per the report, found evidence that voting machines may have been manipulated or hacked.

(29,322 posts)They just cost money to do it and have to file before deadlines. In Michigan it is cheaper if its close so she'll have to pay $125 per precinct with 1500 precincts in Michigan

(2,679 posts)If we just gave 2-5$, she might get what she needs, each of us is be out a few bucks and a we get a better look at what happened in those states.
You never know it might turn out Hillary won those states and that would be the best 2 dollars I ever spent.
Could turn up nothing and we are still stuck with orange man. I am only our a few bucks for trying.
My only thing is I don't want her getting more money then this costs! That's probably the only reason I haven't donated.
Now if says if more money is raised then needed, and the extra will be donated to the ACLU or Planed Parenthood. That would really make it hard not to donate. Might as well try. What have we got to loose?

Do you suppose she's doing this because the WH really doesn't want this to happen? That's per that NY Mag article anyway. I thought Jill was supportive of drumpf so again, confused about the motive.

If Stein petitions for a recount by 5:00 p.m. on Friday and has the money to pay for it, WEC Administrator Mike Haas said the agency is required by state law to order it - barring a court order that says otherwise.

(151 posts)Only problem is the filing deadlines are coming up. If the people able to file for recounts setup with the same site as Jill did they should have their challenge money within a day.
While we are at it and people are still angry, it might be a good time to setup a reward fund for people willing to come forward with insider information that leads to an indictments and convictions for election fraud!
