Breaking News: House GOP reverses course on gutting ethics panel

Source: Politico

UPDATE: Following a public outcry, and criticism from President-elect Donald Trump, House Republicans reversed course Tuesday on drastic changes to the independent Office of Congressional Ethics. House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) offered a motion to restore the current OCE rules, and that was accepted by the GOP conference.

House Republicans pull plan to gut independent ethics panel after Trump tweets

Washington (CNN)House Republican leaders have pulled a proposal that would gut its independent ethics panel, amid widespread criticism of the plan, multiple lawmakers tell CNN.

The decision comes less than two hours after President-elect Donald Trump criticized the timing of the vote, which was scheduled for the first day of the new congressional session.

Trump called out his fellow Republicans Tuesday for proposing to curb the powers of the independent ethics panel as their first move of the year, although the President-elect suggested the ethics panel was "unfair."

"With all that Congress has to work on, do they really have to make the weakening of the Independent Ethics Watchdog, as unfair as it ... may be, their number one act and priority. Focus on tax reform, healthcare and so many other things of far greater importance! #DTS," Trump said over two consecutive tweets.

This have anything to do with it?

'President-elect Donald J. Trump criticized House Republicans on Tuesday for their surprise move to gut an independent congressional ethics office on the eve of a new legislative session, saying they should focus instead on domestic policy priorities such as health care and a tax overhaul.

In a pair of postings on Twitter, Mr. Trump called the Office of Congressional Ethics “unfair,” but he said focusing on it now was a case of misplaced priorities. He appended the hashtag “DTS,” an apparent allusion to his promise to “drain the swamp” in Washington.'

To make Trump look "presidential". The intent was never to do away with the panel because they knew folks would be in an uproar, especially with this new administration. I think I believe they were in cahoots about it from the get-go.

I hadn't heard that, but I had noticed that A) there was tremendous outcry on social media as soon as the story broke last night And B) some media outlets are hastening to give the Trump tweet credit for the GOP's decision to reverse course and not the public's phone calls, tweets, etc.

After Backlash, Including From Trump, House GOP Drops Weakening Of Ethics Office

January 3, 201712:43 PM ET

Brian Naylor
...................................

Other opposition to the gutting of the office was swift, and came from some unexpected sources.

............................

Judicial Watch, the conservative group that has led efforts to release former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's e-mails, called the House rules change "shady and corrupt," and a "drive by effort" to eliminate the OCE, and "a poor way for the Republican majority to begin "draining the swamp.'"

House Speaker Paul Ryan issued a statement saying many members feel that after eight years, the office "is in need of reform." Ryan said the office will continue to operate independently and still take complaints from members of the public. He said the House Ethics Committee will merely provide oversight of the complaints office but he insisted that the office "is not controlled by the committee."

The Project on Government Oversight also chimed in, saying ethics watchdogs like the OCE "need to be strengthened and expanded-not taken out back and shot in the middle of the night."

for crediting trump with the withdrawal of this. It was the constituents, and many other observers who did this, not that orange POS.

Everyone, please inundate the news media for lying about this and crediting trump.

Anyway, the tweet attributed to trump was coherent and correctly spelled. He did not write it. Some staffer did, and hedged his wording at the same time.

PLEASE let the media know that we are on to their lies.

we need to go ahead and keep constant pressure on the throats of these critters. they know that the news will gladly feed on them as much as they fed on the Democrats especially because, since they are ones in power they are the only ones the media can actually feed on. They also know that thanks to Donald Trump's charmed life and his willingness to attack anyone but does not kowtow to him that the news media will be more reluctant to attack Trump then they would a congressperson. We also know that Mr. orange, will probably join in on the kicking so that he can claim credit for it, as he will undoubtedly claim credit for this..

The moral of the story, make and outcry quick, make it loud,, and do not lessen the pressure for one damn second until you win.

let us never forget the playbook that Mitch McConnell laid out for us himself, "our goal is nothing less than to make Donald Trump a one term president."let us not forget the other half of which in some ways is even more important. "Our goal is then to ensure that most of our Congress are in their last term of office."

I think this was done on purpose to make Donald Trump look good. Stuff like this does not happen in politics. Politics is more stage managed than many people think. On a number of occasions the outcomes are already known before the public learns about issues. I doubt the Republican Party would have moved forward with this idea if they had not either known Trump would support the idea, or known Trump would oppose the idea and they would reverse course. There is the chance that Trump betrayed the Republican Party by at first privately supporting the effort to gut ethics, but then publicly changing his stance and opposing the gutting of the ethics council. However, I still think this was a stunt done to make Trump seem strong and independent.
