Florida health officials deny cover-up in TB outbreak
Source: Reuters
(Reuters) - Florida state health officials have denied they covered up a sharp spike in tuberculosis infections among the homeless in Jacksonville and said the public was not at risk from what is believed to be the worst TB outbreak in the nation in 20 years.
At least 13 people have died and another 99 have contracted TB in the outbreak in Jacksonville, the state's largest city with a population of 825,000.
The Florida Department of Health said local, state and federal officials were working to contain the infections and that there was no need for a highly publicized alert even though up to 3,000 people may be at risk of contracting TB.
State health officials also defended their decision not to raise a general alarm because the population of infected homeless persons appeared isolated and contained.

(12,272 posts)At one time, the idea of putting TB patients in prison, to ensure they received the entire 6 months of treatment, was considered. Drug resistant TB emerged because people wouldn't finish the cycle of antibiotics, so all the bacteria wasn't killed and the ones that survived were stronger/resistant.
This is so reckless and having worked in medicine in Fla, I have little respect for many of the practitioners there, but this is beyond corruption, this is criminally insane.

(13,029 posts)because most people are too stupid to understand. They still think that no matter what disease they get, their doctor can just prescribe them a few days of pills, and everything will be hunky-dory.

(512 posts)So as long as only the homeless are infected, it's perfectly OK.
The homeless, poor and vulnerable are truly untermenschen in the United States, aren't they?

(776 posts)I called a bunch of GOP office & urged them not to endanger them selves or
get infected & spread it all over the country.
STAY OUT OF FLORIDA!
I had a lot of fun feigning concern & telling them how contagious it was & no
matter how rich you are someone could sneeze on anything you touch & BAM!!
you r infected.
The responses were muted, quiet & scared sounding.
BTW Guv. Skelator references were loudly loved by dems, who I urged to require TB screening from all
Reps & Sens attending the convention, b4 they are allowed into session.

(37,342 posts)even this should be a reason for universal health care.
In Ft. Lauderdale they have homeless selling newspapers which is a upscale form of panhandling. I've been told by the locals that these people have MRSA and that the papers are infected. I don't know if this is true, but really have no easy and safe way to find out. It's Florida so there are all sorts of money collection scams going on. "Churches" and "War Veterans" are popular.
Under the republican world view if I don't have to help pay for something it's paid for with magic money.

(7,650 posts)The bare minimum one hopes for from a public health official is that they NOT hide diseases, especially infectious ones.
These officials in Florida appear to have failed to meet the barest minimumest possible standard for proper conduct for someone entrusted to protect public health. They should be gone yesterday.
