Breaking Tradition, World Series Champion Cubs to Visit White House Before Obama Leaves, Avoiding Trump

by Joe DePaolo | 1:56 pm, January 11th, 2017

Just four days before President Barack Obama leaves office, the World Series champion Chicago Cubs are going to pay him a visit — in a break with recent tradition which dictates that the champions’ visit take place during the next season.

NBC Chicago first reported that the Cubs, who broke their 108 year World Series drought by finally breaking through this past November, will visit the outgoing President on Monday — just days before the Inauguration of his successor, Donald Trump.

Obama — a longtime fan of the Cubs’ crosstown rivals, the Chicago White Sox — extended the invite on Twitter immediately after the Cubs secured their dramatic Game 7 victory.

. . .The sports world has shown in the last year that it is developing a new kind of consciousness. The best way to extend that in the months ahead is for no team to ever grace this White House with its presence. No one is required to visit; it is not written in any rule book or collective-bargaining agreement. Athletes have a choice, and the choice should be to just say “no” to going to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, unless it’s with a picket sign in their hand.

Sports are perhaps the closest thing this nation has to a true meritocracy, and reflect this nation's diversity. Can't see athletes from a wide variety of backgrounds wanting to visit a narrow-minded, regressionist racist.

Thank you, Theo! Thank you, Laura! Thank you, President Obama for extending the invitation to them the night they won! I assume it will be web-streamed, and I can't wait to watch!

Part of the reason they broke with tradition is that a number of players won't be back next season. Having the visit during the offseason will allow all of those players to make the trip.

I was so excited about the win. Then days later it all came crashing down when we lost the election and all that was in my mind when I saw the Cubbies symbols around my city was how evil money including ricketts money got him elected.

The whole city had a weird feel too it those weeks. There was crazy excitement when the cubs won then several days later the city felt like it went into a deep depression.

I guess the ricketts could have told the Cubs they would have to be traditional and wait for Trump.

But, like others say Laura and Theo are on our side.

And PK Wrigley was a horrible person.
