Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) may be a civil rights icon, but Republican Maine Gov. Paul LePage thinks he could use a history lesson on civil rights in the United States.
The Portland Press Herald reports that LePage slammed Lewis for questioning President-elect Donald Trumps legitimacy during a regular appearance on a local talk radio show, and he said Lewis needed to show more gratitude to past white presidents who worked to free black people from slavery.
John Lewis ought to look at history, the governor told the George Hale and Ric Tyler Show on the Bangor-based radio station WVOM. It was Abraham Lincoln who freed the slaves, it was Rutherford B. Hayes and Ulysses S. Grant who fought against Jim Crow laws. A simple thank you would suffice.
Christopher Cousins of the Bangor Daily News writes that LePage is simply incorrect when it comes to the history of Jim Crow laws, however, as Hayes agreed to an informal deal after a contested election that gave him the White House in exchange for promising to pull Northern troops out of the South, which thus allowed Jim Crow laws to take root.

Maine governor to Rep. John Lewis: You need a history lesson
PORTLAND, Maine (AP) Maine Gov. Paul LePage says U.S. Rep. John Lewis needs a history lesson and should be grateful for all that presidents have done for black people.
The Republican governor on Tuesday addressed Lewis criticism that GOP President-elect Donald Trump is not a legitimate president. LePage, whos white, said on WVOM-FM that the black Democratic Georgia congressman needs a lesson on how presidents freed the slaves and fought against Jim Crow laws. LePage says, A simple thank you should suffice.
Lewis was one of the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. He suffered a fractured skull while leading the march in Selma, Alabama.
LePage also had harsh words for a Maine congresswoman who, like Lewis, is skipping the inauguration. He says Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree should resign if she doesnt attend.

(8,733 posts)It's not an opinion. He is factually incorrect. Hayes and Grant did not fight or remove Southern Jim Crow laws. Even the best interpretation of events would show that their actions and inaction, made it worse.

(14,921 posts)"Mr. LePage said he was "enormously angry" at being called a racist, and restated his earlier remarks which cast Maine's drug problem in racial terms.
He said: "When you go to war, if you know the enemy and the enemy dresses in red and you dress in blue, then you shoot at red."
He added: "You shoot at the enemy. You try to identify the enemy and the enemy right now, the overwhelming majority of people coming in, are people of colour or people of Hispanic origin."
Leading Democrat figures are now calling for the governor to step down."

(2,056 posts)I recently stated that LePage is the absolute worst governor in the history of the country. He is stupid, a raging asswipe, hires his own family members, ignores the law and thinks he's above it, bullies, threatens and acts the ass. He even left a drunken profanity laden voice mail to another state politician threatening him because the lawmaker called him a racist.
Ironically, I don't think LePage is actually a racist...he's an equal opportunity asshole...he's miserable to everyone. If I passed him on the street I'd kick him in the balls. I despise him that much.
