Trump poised to reinstate 'global gag rule' on Roe v. Wade anniversary: report
BY NIKITA VLADIMIROV - 01/19/17 07:23 PM EST
President-elect Donald Trump plans to reinstate the Mexico City policy that bans federal funds for nongovernmental organizations that offer abortions or even provide information about abortion, a congressional staffer told Foreign Policy on Thursday.
The policy, also know as the global gag rule, could be reinstated as early as Sunday, the report noted. If so, it would coincide with the anniversary of Roe v. Wade Supreme Court ruling that made abortion legal, which was decided on January 22, 1973.
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, (D-N.H.) told the publication that she is prepared to fight the newly sworn-in president through legislative procedures, should he choose to implement the executive order.
It will be one of their first actions, which is very short-sighted, she told Foreign Policy.

(43,321 posts)that the collusion on the far right to get this front man/stooge elected
has involved far more people, groups, and time than any of us imagined
Name some group on the right, on the "winning" side that didn't get
something out of this boobie trapped election
Koch Bros? Nuclear energy? Russia? Fundamentalists? Right to Lifers?
Birthers? Logging? Mining? Drilling? Military Industrial Complex? Reince?
Wasn't it strange how Ryan/McConnell wouldn't talk to him? All for public
show, they were in on it, the strategy was shared behind closed doors.
What I'm saying is, they knew they couldn't win an honest election.
So they took 30 years to thumb the scale, found their dream pop culture
candidate, installed him, and now have it all. Trump doesn't care. He's
either on top of it, in on it, or is being pushed by everybody who has
something on his imprudent business/background/lifestyle/debt and they're
calling in their chips or holding it over his head.

(61,698 posts)Because they are too weak to win on their individual priority platforms. You nailed it. They even rationalize trumps vulgarity. But they wouldn't let their daughters near him, and they don't want to socialize with him.

(28,811 posts)in NC alone, i heard on the news the other day that 15 out of 1,000 women had abortions (can't recall the year, but it was recent). There is clearly a huge demand for it.
maybe the march tomorrow will make a difference. eventually the people will take the day. it hurts to think of all the damage he will inflict in his time.

(101,380 posts)Whether people in the USA like it or not is more or less irrelevant, until the 2020 election, anyway, and frankly a measure that has its affects overseas is not going to come up in a US presidential election (hell, climate change barely came up, and that matters inside the USA).
What it does it stop NGOs doing anything with, or talking about, abortion in any overseas program, if any part of that group gets federal money for anything.
...
A more than 50-year-old law already prohibits NGOs that receive U.S. funding from using it to perform abortions or encourage anyone to practice abortions. But in 1984, Republican President Ronald Reagan expanded the limitation and established the Mexico City policy, instructing USAID to bar funds from any NGO that used even nongovernment sources to provide a range of services, from information regarding abortion to lobbying foreign governments to make it available.
Democratic President Bill Clinton rescinded the rule. Republican George W. Bush brought it back and extended it to the State Department. His successor, Obama, a Democrat, axed it on his second day in office in 2009.
...
She warned of the potentially adverse consequences to U.S. foreign policy of both restoring the gag rule and also cutting funding for programs dedicated to health and gender equality. Hurlburt pointed to a growing body of research that has found gender inequality fosters extremism and that the more women are given a voice, the better chances of avoiding conflict.
http://foreignpolicy.com/2017/01/19/will-trump-target-womens-programs-worldwide/
So the 'global gag rule' is expected as a standard Republican anti-abortion move. If Trump also cuts the health or equality programs, he'll be removing things that even Dubya saw some good in because they makes places more peaceful.

(1,382 posts)Every time a Republican enters office they reinstate this rule, and every time a Democrat enters office they terminate it.
This is one of the least surprising things he will do, and is one of the benefits of winning elections.
