Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump said Sunday he will begin renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement when he meets with the leaders of Canada and Mexico.

A central promise of Trump's campaign was that he would revamp the 23-year-old trade pact.

At a White House event Sunday, Trump said he had scheduled meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Enrique Pea Nieto.

"We're going to start some negotiations having to do with NAFTA," Trump said.

Waltz into a room and get them to agree to some changes? "Here, sign right here. Don't worry. It's going to be great. Believe me."

Nothing ever came of it once he took office; don't know if that was because he had his hands full with the Great Recession until he no longer had a workable Congress, or if he examined the situation and decided a renegotiation at this date couldn't really improve matters.

He can not do it by fiat. You are correct that i should not have used the word treaty since it triggers a different level of requirements for approval..

Deals make all parties better off, or at least they have to get something
important to them

How do you improve upon free trade?

Can you improve upon free trade?

Tariffs and trade restrictions are generally considered to be one significant
cause of the Great Depression. Most economists have embraced the goal
of free trade since World War II.

The benefits of undoing free trade are what, exactly?

Somehow I think his negotiating skills are about as good as his romantic skills. He's used to playing hardball with what he sees as his opponents. What does he think he has for leverage? And how much damage will this do to our relationships with these two countries?
