Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway is backtracking on a statement which suggested that President Trump is never going to release his tax returns, even after his IRS audit is finished.
During a Sunday show appearance on ABCs This Week, Conway was asked by George Stephanopoulos about whether the White House had a response to the We The People petition which demanded that Trump produce his tax information. Conway had this to say:
The White House response is that hes not going to release his tax returns. We litigated this all through the election. People didnt care, they voted for him.
As various media outlets took that to mean that Trump will never release his tax returns despite previous promises to do so, Conway took to Twitter on Monday to clarify:

On taxes, answers (& repeated questions) are same from campaign: POTUS is under audit and will not release until that is completed. #nonews

Trumps decision to not release his taxes goes against a tradition that all U.S. presidents in recent history have abided by. The decision has been a major source of criticism, with political opponents saying Trumps returns would shed light on his foreign business dealings, potential connections with Russia, and various related subjects.

(6,941 posts)That is too vanilla a phrase. She said he wasn't gonna release his tax returns. That doesn't go away when another set of keys is dangled in front of the cameras.

(81,607 posts)Hmm. Guessing the "audit" will last until January 2021 or whenever he's impeached. After he's out of office the taxes won't matter.

(11,523 posts)My thoughts on this are as follows:
The 'under audit' line is just a smokescreen, he has no intention of ever releasing tax returns because it would show how indebted he is to foreign interests, including Russia. Being 'audited' doesn't preclude him from releasing his taxes for public viewing.
What did he do to catch the attention of the IRS? Most all of the businesses I've ever known to be audited by the IRS broke were trying to get away with something illegal related to their taxes. What's tRump hiding?

(26,322 posts)illegal deductions assuming of course there is an audit but even then there are people saying he can still release his past tax returns as an IRS audit apparently doesnt prevent him from doing that and hes just blowing smoke out his ass which after watching the vileness that is Trump during the elections wouldnt surprise me.

(9,205 posts)but I find it hard to believe that his 2014 returns have been under audit for more than 18 months.

(9,350 posts)I bet the audit will either last until Trump is no longer in office, or until he is an actual billionaire.

(7,533 posts)that he's "always under audit" every year. This actually makes sense because anyone with that much money moving through their accounts is someone to keep an eye on even if they don't suspect wrongdoing. It's very likely in a bigger return that mistakes will happen. I'm sure millionaires get special handling by the IRS in many cases.
Not an excuse, but that's probably why he can safely say "I'm not going to release them until the audit is over" because he's under constant audit.

(49,046 posts)Or is tRump going to be under perpetual audit and therefore perpetual audit excuse?

(22,651 posts)That petition system is wayy to transparent for Republicans. IMO, Obamas petition system will be disappeared as soon as they get someone to work on Americas White House website. They haven't updated any of it with information about the new officials. They're very behind on the transition.

(1,570 posts)The audit excuse was made up when Donald didn't even think he would be the Republican nominee. It was never intended to last. He was expecting to be on the hunt for wife number four by now.
The fact that they can't even show a simple letter from an IRS employee (even redacted) informing him he is under audit is very telling.
