Questions arise over attorney general Hawley's residence

Source: KOMU

JEFFERSON CITY (AP) — Missouri's new Republican attorney general said he doesn't intend to live in Jefferson City, despite a state law that appears to require him to "reside" there.

Josh Hawley took office Jan. 9 after a campaign that touted his experience as a constitutional lawyer.

A state law says the attorney general "shall reside at the seat of government," which the Missouri Constitution says is Jefferson City. Hawley lives about 20 miles north Jefferson City near Ashland.

A legal analysis provided Tuesday by a deputy attorney general said Hawley is following the law because his home is within "ordinary commuting distance" of Jefferson City.

However, Assistant House Minority Leader Gina Mitten, a Democrat from St. Louis, said Hawley can either live in Columbia or be attorney general, but he can't do both.

There used to be a rule like that here for city cops, they had to live inside the city limits. I think the cops told them where to stick it. You cant just sell your home to move a few miles. It seems like a strange rule for a state office, especially if he could drive it daily. My daughter drives over 50 miles 1 way to work. Not a big deal.

The old fossil probably doesn't even remember what a wheat stalk looks like - but it's ok with Bitchy Mitchy, so no problem.
