First legal Cuban cargo in more than 50 years arrives in US

Source: Associated Press

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The first legal cargo from Cuba in more than 50 years has arrived in the United State.

The Miami Herald (https://goo.gl/PZLZz8 ) reports that two containers of artisanal charcoal arrived Tuesday morning at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale aboard a Crowley Maritime ship called the K-Storm.

The special charcoal is made from Cuban marabu by private, worker-owned cooperatives. Marabu is an invasive woody species from Africa that is considered a nuisance on the island.

The exports are legal under a rule change by the Obama administration that allows the importation of some products produced by independent Cuban entrepreneurs. The United States has imposed a trade embargo on Cuba for more than half a century.

He cares about $$$ first, and there's lots of money to be made if Cuba is fully opened up. Trump will want to build some hotels there.

All of his cabinet are businessmen too.

Cuban Trade Delegation Visits Port of New Orleans

A group of economic development officials and port operators from Cuba are making a goodwill tour of six American seaports, and on Wednesday, they arrived at the Port of New Orleans to discuss new opportunities for trade.

The delegation met with representatives from local manufacturers, shippers and logistics providers, and the port gave them a tour of the harbor. In return, the delegates gave an overview of investment opportunities at the Mariel Special Economic Zone and the new Mariel Container Terminal, located about 15 nm to the west of Havana.

Delegations of American port executives and economic development officials have already visited Cuba, including representatives from Norfolk, Port Everglades, Tampa, Houston, and New Orleans.

“We’re very pleased that Cuba’s leading trade ambassadors are visiting Louisiana so soon after our [earlier] business development mission there,” said Louisiana economic development secretary Don Pierson. “We have an unmatched port system here in Louisiana, and the leaders of those ports continue to prioritize trade with Cuba on many fronts."

Gov. Rick Scott not happy about Florida ports getting legal cargo from Cuba

The first legal cargo from Cuba -- artisanal charcoal -- in more than half a century arrived in Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades on Tuesday, ahead of a visit later this week from Cuban government representatives to several Florida seaports where they hope to do business.

On Wednesday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott warned those ports, which include the Port of Palm Beach and Port Tampa Bay, that he will push to cut state funding to their operations if they engage in business with Cuba.

His idea would be reflected in the budget proposal he sends state lawmakers, which is not binding. It's unclear how much funding could be affected if the Legislature were to adopt Scott's posture.

The governor announced his position -- in English and Spanish -- on Twitter.
