NATO Shows Firepower in Poland as U.S. Allies Worry About Russia
by Bill Neely
ZAGAN, Poland On a snowy Polish plain dominated by Russian forces for decades, American tanks and troops sent a message to Moscow and demonstrated the firepower of the NATO alliance on Monday.
Amid concerns that President Donald Trump's commitment to NATO is wavering, the tanks fired salvos that declared the 28-nation alliance a vital deterrent in a dangerous new world.
The tank rounds of "The Iron Brigade" of the 4th Infantry Division were not directed towards Russia, but the signal to the Kremlin was clear: "Don't mess with Poland, or any other NATO member an attack on one, is an attack on all."
The 87 tanks, 144 armored vehicle and 3,500 troops represent the biggest U.S. deployment in Europe since the end of the Cold War.

(10,279 posts)will raise hell if Trump pulls them out. Now is the time for the Dealer-in-Chief to show us his talent in getting increased payments for USA's military assistance.

(1,717 posts)just as soon as Russia and Mexico sign a defense treaty.
The US pledged in the early 1990's to not expand NATO to the east,
and that pledge has been broken by every subsequent US President.
"Exceptional" hyper-powers get to blow off the pledges they make;
solemn promises are for suckers.
Central Europe should be a de-militarized zone, as was envisioned by
former NATO commanding general John Galvin.
The degree to which US foreign policy and media reporting has been
taken over by the militarists is downright scary.

(1,717 posts)George Baker did make such a pledge, and that is what
led to the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact.
But the Guardian article is correct that there was not a
"binding" agreement.
And . . http://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-shifrinson-russia-us-nato-deal--20160530-snap-story.html
"No formal deal was struck, but from all the evidence, the quid pro quo was clear: Gorbachev acceded to Germanys western alignment and the U.S. would limit NATOs expansion."
The militarists already have several "Forever Wars" going in
Asia and the Middle East . .
and they are pushing for military face-offs against both
Russia and China.
Are you really OK with that?

(3,585 posts)Putin's claim is a fake claim, and Obama was correct in offering resistance to Putin's aggression.
FairWinds
(1,717 posts)the LA Times has a LOT of other reputable sources
that agree with that article.
Veterans For Peace opposes all aggression - including that
of the US.

Just because you assert something, does not make it so.
