Ford Motors is speaking out against President Donald Trumps ban on travelers coming from seven majority-Muslim countries, slamming the order as against the companys core value[s], the Hill reports.
The order, which was signed on Friday, issued a 120-day ban on refugees, and a 90-day ban on immigrants entering the country from Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Libya and Yemen.
The company made the remarks on Monday. In a joint statement, Executive Chairman Bill Ford and President and CEO Mark Fields said, Respect for all people is a core value of Ford Motor Company, and we are proud of the rich diversity of our company here at home and around the world. They added, That is why we do not support this policy or any other that goes against our values as a company.
Fields met with the Trump administration last week, calling it a very, very positive meeting. He is also a member of the Trump teams manufacturing council. The Ford executives noted in their joint statement, We will continue working to ensure the well-being of our employees by promoting the values of respect and inclusion in the workplace.

(409 posts)We need whatever institutions ordinary Americans still respect to speak out.

(13,776 posts)It really is.
1) It offends 35% of the population. Even knuckle-draggers buy cars. Ford is taking a risk when they speak out about a political matter. (Well, it's a human-rights matter, but not to Trump's voters.)
2) Obviously, who knows how Trump might retaliate, but retaliation is his thing.
I'm really impressed by Ford. They didn't have to speak out, but they did.

(5,231 posts)There is a huge Muslim population there, and lots of them work for FMC. I worked there almost 20 years myself. I do think that Bill Ford, Jr. is an incredibly decent man, and this is likely his doing. The CEO, Fields, is a little more shady in his politics. Pretty much leans whatever way the wind blows (he's already gushed over little hands a few times now).

(15,540 posts)There are plenty of trump voters in MI that really believe he's going to bring back those high paying union factory jobs and who work at Ford (or Fords as they say here in Michigan), so they're going to have a bit of cognitive dissonance that the CEO isn't in love with their guy. Serves them right.
I agree that Bill Ford, Jr. seems to be a very decent person.

(5,231 posts)Yes, the cognitive dissonance level in Michigan is quite high. Sigh.
