Article 50: MPs must honour British people's leave vote

Source: The Guardian

David Davis, the Brexit secretary, urged MPs to “honour (their) side of the agreement” with the British people by approving legislation to allow Theresa May to take the UK out of the EU.

On the first day of parliament’s debates on the Brexit bill, Davis said the UK had already passed a “point of no return” as the democratic mandate was clear in last June’s referendum in favour of leaving the EU.

The Brexit secretary said there would be “no attempts to remain inside the EU, no attempts to rejoin it by the back door and no second referendum”, as he opened a two-day debate on the second reading of the bill.

“The eyes of the nation are on this chamber as we consider this bill,” he said. “For many years there has been a creeping sense in the country that politicians say one thing and do another. We voted to give the people the chance to determine the future in a referendum. Now we must honour our side of the agreement to vote to deliver on the result. We are considering a very simple question: do we trust the people or not?”

in the fact that it takes politicians off the hook for bad outcomes. For them it's a win-win. Less work, less responsibility.
