President Donald Trump's meeting with Intel CEO Brian Krzanich turned into a product announcement with a presidential touch on Wednesday when Krzanich promoted the corporation's new investments while standing in the Oval Office.
-snip-
"I just want to introduce Brian Krzanich, who is the CEO of Intel, a great, great company," Trump said. He said that Krzanich had a "very big announcement" and invited him to speak.
"Brian, why don't you say a few words and maybe also talk about the product you're going to be making?" Trump said. "It's amazing."
"It's an honor to be here today representing Intel and to be able to announce our $7 billion investment in our newest most advanced factory, Fab 42, in Chandler, Arizona," Krzanich said. The executive said the factory will produce 7-nanometer semiconductor chips and create about 3,000 direct jobs, with over 10,000 more created in support of the factory.

David Gregory Bemoans Intel CEO Selling His Wares in Oval Office as a Dog and Pony Show
By Justin Baragona | 2:14 pm, February 8th, 2017
The CEO of Intel, Brian Krzanich, met with President Donald Trump in the White House today and spoke to reporters from the Oval Office. With Trump sitting at his desk, Krzanich described the companys new $7 billion investment that will bring in new American tech jobs.
Following the publicized meeting, a CNN panel discussed the event, with CNN chief political analyst Gloria Borger calling it a semi-advertisement while also noting that Krzanich seemed a little uncomfortable because he was likely waiting on a question surrounding his opposition to Trumps travel ban.
Meanwhile, political analyst David Gregory provided some sharp criticism of what they just witnessed. The whole scene was bizarre, he said. I have never seen the Oval Office used for this kind of dog and pony show with the president seated and a very uncomfortable-looking CEO literally selling his wares.
Gregory did note that if you are a supporter of the president, you will see Trump as a president of action and more good news.

(12 posts)It's really disheartening to see the Oval Office used like this - Its a PR professional's dream 'media hit'(I'm sure Intel paid it's lobbyists and PR firm a small fortune to make it happen). I'm sure we'll see more of this type of announcement this year. Getting to launch a product from the Oval is going to be the next PR demand on par with 'Get my product on Oprah!"

(16,093 posts)...how many H1-B visas will you need to fill those positions...because as Intel keeps saying, there are no Americans with the requisite skills to do the job!

(10,749 posts)This just in: https://www.numbersusa.com/news/intel-will-layoff-12000-american-workers-after-requesting-14523-foreign-workers
Intel fired 12,000 American workers, hired 14,523 H1-B workers over the past few years. If the announcement is true - and coming from the WH we can be sure it itsn't - then it's pretty much a wash of American workers out, foreign workers in.
Also, note the parsing of the words, "and another 10,000 more created in support of the factory." Are these Intel jobs? Construction jobs? Long-term? Short-term? New jobs or simply the allocation of existing workers to a new project?
Yet one more story to be fact-checked.

(6,932 posts)but with a slowing of computer sales they just used the two EXISTING buildings in Chandler for the time being. Now with demand going back up since 2013 they have opened it.
"It will be used for future technologies at a future date, Mulloy said of the new building. Which technologies and when it will become operational have not been determined, Mulloy said.
There are about 11,900 full-time employees at Intels two Chandler campuses. In 2011, when plans for the new fabrication facility were announced, there were about 9,700 full-time employees.
It doesnt matter which building they work in; weve already increased the workforce by more than 1,000 people at that work site, Mulloy said.
Intel received about $3.3 million in state tax credits from the Arizona Commerce Authority for job creation, the organization reported. The company received credit for 348 jobs in 2011 and 743 jobs in 2012. This credit is available for companies that create at least 25 jobs and invest at least $5 million in capital.
