CIA Memo: Designating Muslim Brotherhood Could 'Fuel Extremism'
Source: Politico
Trump administration officials pushing to designate the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization face at least one significant obstacle: analysts at the Central Intelligence Agency.
CIA experts have warned that so labeling the decades-old Islamist group may fuel extremism and damage relations with America's allies, according to a summary of a finished intelligence report for the intelligence community and policymakers that was shared with POLITICO by a U.S. official.
The document, published internally on Jan. 31, notes that the Brotherhoodwhich boasts millions of followers around the Arab worldhas rejected violence as a matter of official policy and opposed al-Qaida and ISIS.
It acknowledges that a minority of MB [Muslim Brotherhood] members have engaged in violence, most often in response to harsh regime repression, perceived foreign occupation, or civil conflicts. Noting that there are branches of the group in countries such as Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco and Tunisia, it cautions that some of Americas allies in the region probably worry that such a step could destabilize their internal politics, feed extremist narratives, and anger Muslims worldwide.

In other words, it would be another way to cultivate a war with the Muslim world if you're Steve Bannon.

(92,217 posts)make any mistake about it, the Muslim Brotherhood is a double edged sword, and cuts both ways.. They were key in the assassination of Anwar Sadat, even though Sadat was more tolerant toward them, then his predecessors

(409 posts)The Brotherhood is not a broadly cohesive movement. The Brotherhood in Syria is not the same as in Saudi Arabia, or in Jordan, or in Tunisia. Hassan al-Banna was not the same as Sayyid Qutb. Even in Qutb's incendiary language there was ambiguity that left room for interpretations to support non-violent Islamism.

(2,037 posts)Just as Bush feigned surprise during 911 (the man's a terrible actor) only to then let the entire bin Laden clan hotfoot it out of the U.S. while everyone's else flights were grounded, Trump is basically tying to stir the hornet's nest while carefully avoiding conflict with countries in which he has business interests.
Between those two, I think they've covered practically everything the Founding Fathers were trying to prevent.

A good trick to keep track of these words is that then is usually used to indicate time. Both then and time have a letter E in them. Than is used to make comparisons. Both than and comparison have a letter A in them.)
And I agree with your post.

(531 posts)but then again...another stupid thing he is doing that is going to have zero positive outcome and could have some negative outcome. It would be really nice if he would do something actually effective instead of stupid stuff like this that just appears to fulfill campaign promises
