New Mexico may allow medical marijuana for all veterans

Updated: 8:26 PM MST Feb 8, 2017
Associated Press

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) —

Extensive revisions to New Mexico's medical marijuana program that would automatically allow all military veterans to qualify as patients are advancing in the state Legislature.

The Senate Judiciary Committee endorsed the proposed legislation on Wednesday despite objections from members to the veterans' eligibility provisions. The bill's next stop is the full Senate.

Other proposed changes to a 2007 law legalizing medical cannabis would add treatable medical conditions including substance abuse disorder. State registry cards for approved patients would require renewal every three years instead of annually.

Senate bill sponsor Cisco McSorley of Albuquerque says the provision for veterans addresses the stigma associated with post-traumatic stress disorder.

I never got close to real fighting, but just being in the military caused me lasting frustration and tension. I could use a little puff once in a while. It's legal where I live now, so no problem, but I wish all vets could share my good fortune.

Sure better than heading over to the club and getting shit faced every night. As one Social Actions officer once said, "Enlisted doing pot doesn't bother me; boozing officers scare the hell outta me."

Cannabinoids have been shown time and again to help with PTSD and pain management. As they are chemically non-addicting, they are a far safer option than the opiods currently used to treat chronic pain. They reduce swelling, inflammation and also encourage formation of new neural pathways that help PTSD sufferers circumnavigate the trauma that their brains are hardwired to return to time and again.

Hopefully Sessions won't f*ck it all up for everyone.

They'd legalize it nation wide and let the states have the final say...Of course, we all know this is a lie and that the republican party is just talking about anything that helps the little guy and are just as big when it comes to fucking him over.

The republican party pisses me off.

Why would a veteran who has not been diagnosed with any malady have the right to use marijuana, but not a fire fighter or a policeman, for example? You can't give a benefit to a whole class of people that others are not given.
