RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) North Carolinas first large-scale wind farm is fully operational despite efforts by some of the states most powerful politicians to shut down the $400 million project as a possible national security threat.
Avangrid Renewables said Thursday its 104 wind turbines reaching 50-stories tall are now generating enough electricity for 60,000 homes. Amazon is buying the power produced in rural, northeastern North Carolina to run its Virginia data centers.
Ten North Carolina legislators including state House Speaker Tim Moore and Senate leader Phil Berger previously urged President Donald Trumps administration to shut down the wind farm because its too close to a long-distance surveillance radar installation. The Navy radar in nearby Chesapeake, Virginia, scans hundreds of miles into the Atlantic and Caribbean for ships and planes.
The Pentagon said last month the two operations can coexist. The company said it trimmed the size of the project, positioned turbines differently, and conducted extensive modeling with the militarys scientists to avoid conflicting with the radar array.

(23,105 posts)He just doesn't want solar or wind or any kind of alternative energy to work since he's invested so much in an oil guy. I'm sure part of it is also that Russia is so dependent on oil and Pootie is his hero, giver of funds and also has him by the short hairs with blackmail. Nothing that's bad for Russia will be allowed to pass in drumpfs dictator loving regime.

(1,570 posts)Assuming the military radar has similar properties to the NOAA TDWR RADAR:
Calculating for beam angle, refraction and the curvature of the Earth, if the RADAR is 42nm (48.3 miles) away on a 0.1 degree scan the bottom of the beam is at 510ft which clears the "50 story" turbines. In-fact, on a 0.1 degree scan out to 25nm, (28.8 miles) the bottom of the beam is experiencing ground interference. If the RADAR operates with a 0.5 degree angle like the WSR-88D the distance to clear is only 15nm. (17.3 miles) If the RADAR has a wider beam spread like the WSR-88D the distance to clear is 24nm. (
27.6 miles)
Add to that the "beamwidth" (spread) at distances shorter than the "clearing distance" and you see that the turbines will play little to no role in RADAR interference. In other words, the RADAR argument is complete bull.
Here's a simple NOAA app for calculating if you want to play around with it.
