Trump promises 'phenomenal' announcement on taxes

Source: Reuters

Thu Feb 9, 2017 | 12:42pm EST

U.S. President Donald Trump promised a major tax announcement in a matter of weeks during a White House meeting with airline executives. "We're going to be announcing something I would say over the next two or three weeks that will be phenomenal in terms of tax and developing our aviation infrastructure," Trump said on Thursday.

Trump also discussed what he called an obsolete U.S. air traffic control system, as well as out-of-date airport infrastructure, train systems and roads. He told the executives he was determined to "change all of that" and said they would be very happy with his proposals.

"So we want to help you realize these goals by rolling back burdensome regulations, and you people are regulated probably as much as almost anybody, although I can think of a couple of industries that are even worse," Trump said.

"Lowering the overall tax burden on American business is big league."

He wants to fix the ATC system...

update our airport infrastructure...

fix our outdated train system (which would be a real good idea - but the biggest thing our outdated train system needs is a second track everywhere there's only one, and where the hell are you going to find the money to buy all the land?)...

plus square away our dilapidated roads and bridges...

and cut taxes at the same time?

14. It's going to cost a lot more than $93,139,500 to do all that stuff
Thu Feb 9, 2017, 05:09 PM
Feb 2017

(The $174,000 annual salary of one Member of Congress x 434 Representatives) + ($174,000 x 100 Senators) + (the $223,500 the Speaker of the House gets) = $93,139,500.

We COULD cut back a lot of that by paying Congressmembers (CM) piecework rates:

"Ceremonial" bills like naming things for anyone but Ronald Reagan: $100
Bill naming anything for Ronald Reagan: CM pays $100 because we already have enough things named after him
Tax cut bills: Declared "recreational" and CM is billed $32 plus tax - the price of a round of golf at East Potomac Golf Course.
Non-ceremonial, non-tax-cut bill that gets tabled: $100
Bill that makes it out of committee: $250
Bill that makes it out of the chamber: $500
Bill that passes both chambers but is vetoed: $1000
Bill signed into law: $2500
Bill enacted through overridden veto: $2000
Cosponsors: $25 if it gets out of one chamber, $50 for both chambers, $100 for enacted law. Payments go to the first 50 cosponsors.
(This isn't cumulative: if Trump signs a law the sponsor gets $2500, NOT the $2500 plus all the incremental payments.)

CM sponsors law that gets overturned by the courts for any reason within 10 years of enactment:
First overturned law: CM pays $5000
Second overturned law: CM pays $10,000
Third overturned law: CM ejected from Congress if he/she is still there; CM that leaves Congress before the bill is overturned pays $20,000 fine
Four or five: $50,000 fine per occurrence
More than that: one year in federal prison for each overturned law past five

A simplistic response, lacking objective evidence to support it is really little more than just another meaningless bumper-sticker.

It would be an irrational mind indeed, who truly believed the budget could be fixed merely with commercial branding, slogans and bumper-stickers.

"Outdated" in 'puke-speak means they haven't privatized it yet but plan to.

Just wait.

Unless we stop them.

P.S. can you imagine the glories of a privatized, for-profit air traffic control system? Our lives will be assigned a $ value and if the profits aren't high enough, we will die at a certain rate to keep the $$$ flowing into the hands of the feudal lords. Simple as that.

Thu Feb 9, 2017, 07:03 PM
Feb 2017

Flying would get more expensive, though. Look at private ambulance services. Most of them do a good job, but the price of getting hauled to the hospital goes through the roof. If they had a private ATC, they'd break the country up into...oh, say 100 cells...and you'd have to pay $1 per passenger if you overflew a whole cell and $10 per passenger to use an airport. Then of course if your plane got diverted to another airport in another cell once it entered an airport's pattern you'd have to pay more fees...imagine the letter "Dear Mr. Jones, you, your wife and your five children were on a flight to Washington Dulles International Airport and were diverted to three other airports before being returned to Washington. Please enclose your firstborn son in this envelope."

31. General aviation will be f**ked
Thu Feb 9, 2017, 09:09 PM
Feb 2017

Airport landing and take-off fees, fees for use of airspace (even if you fly VFR and don't use ATC), etc. will make flying for the average citizen prohibitive.

Business aviation just wraps it into their cost of doing business, and passes the expenses on to the customers (us).

"Privatize" does not mean better or even cheaper.

Regulations exist for a purpose.

Fly the friendly -- oops!

We now travel to the skies over Sea-Tac. It is a pleasant Tuesday morning. There are 50 airplanes stacked up waiting to land. The Head Controller comes on the radio...

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. This is your auctioneer from Trump Air Traffic Control LLC, and it is now time to sell today's landing slots. We have 25 slots available this morning.

Alaska 372, what was that you said? There will be no more landing slots made available this morning. You're no longer eligible for one, so we recommend you find another airport.

United 225, your fuel status is of no importance to me. You should have loaded more fuel at your departure airport. You're also ineligible for a landing slot. Go somewhere else.

We are now opening the bidding at $5000. Do I hear $5000 for a prime landing slot? We have $5000 from Alaska 1369. Do I hear six? That's six. Do I hear seven? Hawaiian 420 bids eight. Hawaiian 420, you want to try for nine? We no longer hear Hawaiian 420...oh wait, there they are, crashing into the Fred Meyer in Burien.

We still have 25 slots open for 47 airplanes. Nine thousand bucks for a landing slot. Anyone want to try for ten?

Is anyone on the air?

Hello?

(The phone rings.)

Hello, Officer Smith of the Washington State Patrol. No, I have no idea why 47 fully-loaded airliners just landed in the middle of I-5 during the morning rush hour. Listen pal, I didn't do anything to make them land there. You got a problem with it? Call President Trump.

Is the low hanging fruit in all this.

What about his word usage and how he says things? He talks like he has suffered brain damage. As if he is substituting words as he speaks because he cannot think of the proper word and it makes his commentary seem disjointed and awkward. As an example in this story, his use of he term "big league" is awkward and fits poorly in the context of the point he was trying to make.

Something is just naggingly off about him. It's unsettling.
