McCain: 'Sinister' attacks on Clinton aide Huma Abedin must stop
Source: LA Times
WASHINGTON -- Republican Sen. John McCain came to an unusual and impassioned defense of a Huma Abedin, a top aide to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, saying the sinister accusations by congressional conservatives about her alleged connection to the Muslim Brotherhood must end.
The attacks have been led by Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), the chairman of the tea party caucus in the House, and four other conservative lawmakers, who have asked federal officials to investigate whether Abedin, a Muslim-American who is deputy chief of staff at the State Department, is using her influence on U.S. policy toward the Islamic group. The lawmakers cite a report showing that Abedins relatives, including her deceased father, have alleged connections to the Muslim Brotherhood.
These attacks on Huma have no logic, no basis, and no merit. And they need to stop now, said McCain, the GOPs former presidential nominee and its top voice on defense policy. I have every confidence in Humas loyalty to our country, and everyone else should as well. All Americans owe Huma a debt of gratitude for her many years of superior public service. I hope these ugly and unfortunate attacks on her can be immediately brought to an end and put behind us before any further damage is done to a woman, an American, of genuine patriotism and love of country.
McCain acknowledged the unusual nature of his decision to come to the Senate floor to speak about a particular individual. But he said he was compelled to do so to protect her character and reputation in the face of attacks being made without concern for fact or fairness.

Anderson Cooper Debunks Michele Bachmann Claims Of 'Muslim Extremist' Infiltration Of US Government (VIDEO)
Anderson Cooper lit into Michele Bachmann on his Tuesday show for spreading rumors about the supposed infiltration by "Muslim extremists" into the U.S. government.
Bachmann, along with four other Republicans in the House of Representatives, has called for investigations into whether or not the government has been infiltrated by Islamic fundamentalists, and has specifically pointed a finger at Huma Abedin, a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton.
Cooper, in understated fashion, said that the evidence was "questionable at best." He spent most of his time debunking the claims about Abedin.
"Now you would think to make a charge like that -- for sitting members of Congress to make a charge like that, that they would have some actual evidence, right?" he said. "You would think that. But the truth is they don't have any direct evidence."

Don't come on Fox news and then change your tune later in the day, have some nuts and do what is right for the country. (8,200 posts)I believe that I was five or six years old, because when I was seven we moved. A woman on the corner called the police on me and my friend for cutting across her lawn on the corner. The police responded and said that she was charging us with trespassing and damaging her lawn. My parents knew that she was a flaming nut, but this was just too much. They contracted their lawyer and threaten to sue her for I believe it was malicious prosecution or something like that. I was glad that we moved out to the country where we were able to roam the fields, fish, catch frogs and snakes. We even got to help a local farmer with the delivery of calves. Strange how somethings just jog your memory of events thought to be long forgotten. It brought back a painful memory, but also those of my brothers and me having the greatest times of our youth.

(10,558 posts)I have been at the Veterans Hospital for the past three hours, multiple appointments and multiple waiting rooms. As I post this I am at the final appointment waiting room. I am using my (so called) 'smart phone' to read and post in the DU while waiting. I am surrounded by other vets, one is discussing his time as a tanker back during Viet Nam. Although I am not partaking in that discussion I am reflecting back on my time in the military. I was a teen, over in Shwabach Germany and I spent most of my offhours exploring the area by bicycle. I recall the sights the smells hell I was even recalling my favorite beer, Leitner Brau, brewed in a small village nearby. All this reflection was prompted by that discussion about tanks....you see I was a tank turret mechanic at the end of the Viet Nam era, but instead of my work back then, my mind was instead transported to the wonderful times I experienced in Shwabach.
So it's okay to damage someone's property? You haven't seen a lawn with a dead grass corner because people are too lazy to use the sidewalk?

(16,093 posts)There should be an investigation...only it is Christian fundamentalists that should be the subject of that investigation. There is already evidence of certain members of Congress who have close associations with Christian groups who in all but words advocate for an American theocracy!
Pat Robertson, Tony Perkins, Franklin Graham...and others seem to have complete access to mainly Republican members of the US Congress...so why not investigate and get rid of the potential traitors and their congressional allies, before it's too late!

(7,865 posts)I think to be safe and prevent any encroachment we need to retire all religious posts from government. The Chaplain corps or the various military branches, the chaplains of the house legislature, White House Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships... etc.
And since Islam utilizes both the old and new testaments then we had best do away with symbols, scriptures, or references to such ...in government. Sharia law is really just an extension (and misinterpretation and misappropriation) of Talmudic law so we should do away with any attempt to legislate into existence any additional laws from the Old Testament.
As a matter of fact we should probably investigate anyone that makes references to Old Testament laws regarding the consumption of shellfish, the mixing of milk and meat of an animal, and screeds against homosexuality. In fact, anyone that is too vocal on their assaults on homosexual marriage or relations or anyone advocating or defending sodomy laws should probably also be investigated.
We should probably reassert the anti-establishment clause of the first amendment to further protect against the encroachment of Sharia. Therefore public schools should be free from prayer and the cub scouts have to decide once and for all about this religious test or lose funding and access to military bases forever. Speaking of the military, along with the abolition of the chaplain corps we would also have to demolish those absurdly expensive on base mega-churches or convert them into buildings useful to the armed forces. Training facilities might be a good use or possibly recreational centers.
Though Islam doesnt share many holy holidays with Christianity we probably shouldnt take any chances. After all, those religious sorts are always re-appropriating each others holidays so as a preemptive strike against that we need to go back to the days of our founding fathers and strike out Christmas. I will miss the whole thing too, but we really cannot take any chances on our war against Sharia and if that means that Father Christmas is an unintentional target then so be it. Most wars do have unintended casualties. It goes without saying that the National day of prayer and any similar state holidays would also go bye-bye.
Since C-Street seems to advocate the power of and for leaders and that they were appointed by god somehow, we must also declare The Family (the religious organization) to be a terrorist organization and freeze all their funding; too much of what they support sounds like Old Testament style Sharia.
I could go on, but you get the point

Furthermore, thanks to Bachmann and a couple of right wing kooks, the demonstrators who threw tomatoes and shoes at Hillary's motorcade thought that the US was favoring the Muslim Brotherhood. These nuts should watch their mouth, they could be responsible for someone getting hurt.

I still think John McCain is a fairly decent person (inspite of giving Palin a national springboard for celebrity).
In a party full of insanity, even small steps like these can be considered brave. After all, this was a speech on the House floor, and he's not even a member. Unlike Romney, McCain actually strikes me as someone having some integrity. Not too common in that party...
I want to add a quote from his statement:
"Ultimately, what is at stake in this matter is larger even than the reputation of one person. This is about who we are as a nation, and who we aspire to be. What makes America exceptional among the countries of the world is that we are bound together as citizens not by blood or class, not by sect or ethnicity, but by a set of enduring, universal, and equal rights that are the foundation of our constitution, our laws, our citizenry, and our identity. When anyone, not least a member of Congress, launches specious and degrading attacks against fellow Americans on the basis of nothing more than fear of who they are and ignorance of what they stand for, it defames the spirit of our nation, and we all grow poorer because of it."
And here's the link to the video (it's farther down on the page).
