Perry told supporters at his caucus night rally that he was heading back to Austin to assess whether he still had a path to victory.
...
Perrys stunning revelation which pundits believe will soon lead to the official termination of his campaign was a stark reversal from his tough talk just hours before.

Romney, Santorum tie in Iowa caucuses as Perry struggles to fifth, suspends bid
With the power of the Iowa caucuses to winnow the field, the bottom tier was clear Newt Gingrich, Perry and Michele Bachmann.
Perry, who had earlier vowed to continue his campaign in South Carolina, instead told a disappointed crowd of supporters that he would return to Texas and assess the results of tonights caucus and determine if there is a path forward for myself in this race, Perry said.
Perrys poor showing was his first election defeat in nine contests over 28 years, and a rapid fall for a candidate who entered the race instantly considered the strongest alternative to Romney.

(10,857 posts)Last night it occurred to me that if Perry wins Texas, Santorum wins Pennsylvania, and three or more (four would be better) candidates secure enough delegates to make a majority impossible, there's a shot at forcing the GOP--who hates selecting their candidates by actual votes--into running multiple ballots at the Convention.
That would be a circus the likes of which no American has seen in a lifetime, and the uncertainty the event would create among authoritarian voters would be profound, the damage done perhaps irreparable.
(My girlfriend asked me if Huntsman had any chance at all, and I told her a Convention fiasco is the only way I can envision him getting the nomination, a little like James Garfield wandered into it in 1880.)
So I hope Perry stays in it long enough to screw it up for everyone else.

(61,648 posts)We don't want the Republicans to coalesce around Romney yet. It's inevitable but the later the better.
