Romney, under pressure to release tax returns, turns fire on Obama
Source: Washington Post
BOWLING GREEN, OHIO Mitt Romney, trying to fend off mounting pressure to release more of his tax returns, stepped up his offense against President Obama on Wednesday, turning Obamas words against him to argue that the current occupant of the Oval Office is anti-entrepreneur.
For the second day in a row, the presumed Republican presidential nominee seized on a statement excerpted from a speech Obama made Friday in Virginia. At issue was the presidents quote: If youve got a business, you didnt build that. Somebody else made that happen.
The flap over Obamas comment has been building for days, fueled by Republicans who say it betrays a mind-set hostile to business.
It shows how out of touch he is with the character of America, Romney told a rally here. This idea of criticizing and attacking success, of demonizing those in all walks of life who have been successful, is something that is so foreign to us that we cant understand it.

Attacking success? REALLY? The Daily Kos caught these statements that Romney made during this town hall (and the Post skipped it):
AND:
Guess what? The same right wingers who were howling and SCREAMING about a selective, out-of-context passage by Obama..."OBAMA IS AN ANTI CAPITALIST NAKED MARXIST"...are now all of a sudden SILENT about pretty much the SAME DAMN THING said by their OWN candidate. Obama's similar statement (with the bold usually the selective RW soundbite):
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If youve got a business -- you didnt build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didnt get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
Twice yesterday, Michael Savage played a clip of the first bolded passage TWICE without addressing the rest of the story. Today? I peeked at "The Savage Nation", and Savage opened Hour 1 actually speaking IN DEFENSE of government aid after watching the HBO documentary Hard Times: Lost on Long Island. He started Hour 2 with a story about shopping. But nothing about Romney's acknowledgment that government helps business. I also peeked at Savage's competitor Mark Levin, and Levin was rambling about how Obama was elitist and can't relate to most Americans because "most of us didn't go to prep school or attend a church with someone like Jeremiah Wright!"

(67,420 posts)while referring to roads and bridges (plural), he referred to "them" as "that" singular). then he mentioned business, also singular.

How do they fool so many people?

(32,036 posts)He grew up without his father, unlike Romney whose dad was an auto executive and state governor. Obama went to Punahou on scholarship and his grandparents' money, unlike Romney's family able to afford prep school.

(57,936 posts)And Obama's family was, as you point out, not as wealthy as Romney's.
Both of them were more fortunate than most of us, but Romney's family was far wealthier than Obama's. And Romney is far more an elitest than Obama.
